Memory Theory Doesn't Work!

It is impossible for Bastian to run out of memories. Technically, every experience warrants a memory. Therefore, when Bastian has just two memories left, he brings Atreyu to life, using one memory but creating one in the process, a memory of giving Atreyu life. That said, he can't run out of memories or wishes. Yes, I know I'm bringing technicality into a children's movie, but it had to be said.

why doesn't he just wish all his memories back?

reply

He only looses memories of his life in the real world. He keeps all of his memories of Fantasia.

in the novel...Bastian loses his memories as each wish is made. he comes across a town/city where all the other humans who have journeyed into the neverending story and have lost all memory of who they are and why they are there. it was kinda creepy cause they were building things that had no purpose like stairs that lead nowhere...since they have lost the memories, they lack the knowledge of returning home. it makes more sense if you have read the novel, but the movie leaves you wondering what the point to all that was.

though i absolutely hate this "sequel", it still maintained key plots from the novel. such as the evil queen, the city made of silver, the river made of acid, and the loss of memories. also the jealousy/betrayal between Bastian and Atreyu. everything else was bogus and went in a completely different direction from the original story.

oops, i went off on a tangent.

also, i have never seen the third movie...and never will.

well, its is just a kids movie

If you want a better opinion of this, it's the only reason you should see the 3rd.
Xayide mentioned that after his last memory had left, he would remember neither his identity nor his own world, nor the purpose of his being there (but she just said it as he wouldn't be able to save the Empress). It is xpressed much better in the novel though.

Am I the only person who actually liked this movie? I guess it was because I saw this one before the first one...still thought the third one was *beep* though, despite the kid from Free Willy as Bastian.

You're good! We should solve crimes!

he should lose all of his memories or the memory machine is useless. The point of it was that he would forget his mission
