Movies the critics were wrong about.
I didn't see this in theaters because I read a couple of negative reviews (one in particular saying the only good part of it was Winona Ryder's performance). When I saw it on video, I was pissed at the critics for steering me away from it. Now I see on RottenTomatoes.com it has a pretty decent average. After that, I learned to go with my gut instinct first. (The same reviewer who panned Mermaids also panned A League of Their Own, so screw him.)
This had happened previously when I saw The Accidental Tourist after hearing raves from Ebert and Siskel, and knowing it got a Academy Award nomination for Best Picture. Ugh! Just to make sure I gave it a fair shot, I even tried to watch it again later when it showed up on Encore and...double ugh! I see by the comments from real people online that I am not alone on either of these.
Other films that got positive reviews which I loathed, and found out I was far from alone.
Anchorman
Risky Business (loved the director's only other film, though)
Braveheart
Something's Gotta Give
Films that got bad reviews that have since stood the test of time:
Clue
Shirley Valentine (Not as good as the one-woman play, but who is likely to find a local production?)
Mommie Dearest (a camp classic)
Xanadu (ditto)
Home Alone (still has a "rotten" rating on RT)
Sometimes I am alone. But I stand by my loathing of Drive and my liking of The Core.
