Love the movie, but unsure where they spent $31 million (in 1990)... With inflation, that would be like spending $75 million on a quaint little romantic dramedy today. Surprised at the high price tag, I don't see evidence of it in the production.

$31M does sound high. Also read Cher was paid $4M for Mermaids. The other actors surely got much less since Cher was in her game circa 1990. I think these budget estimates may be intentionally bloated to attract viewers. How often do people avoid watching a film because it is "low budget?"
