Irritating
I ended up turning it off 20 minutes in. The mother's laughter and the daughter's over-the-top sneering were too obnoxious. A disappointment since I love Naked and expected to like this.

shareThey were forced and came across too unnatural, but I stuck with it and paid the price for the chocolate syrup scene that caused me to lose my appetite.
It was nice to see that most of the actors went on to have nice careers.
The film gets better as it goes on. At first it looks like a suprficial comedy but in the end there is a lot more too it.
shareIf you stick to the end with the film you'll see that Leigh is actually on these characters' side. Once you get past the obnoxious laugh and sneering there's some real pathos to these people. There's a really powerful heart-to-heart scene between Wendy and Nicola towards the very end of the film. In some ways the initial obnoxious characteristics are there to say 'give people a chance and look behind the off-putting surface'.
