IMDb rating

I can't believe that I'm the first person to start a message board after reading some of the user comments. But what's more baffling is the rating of 5.3 on the IMDb, meaning it's not too far from the "Bottom 100" list. There must be some serious Joe haters working at the IMDb, because I know friends and family members I've asked to rate this movie a solid "10," and have witnessed them doing it, in an effort to bring up the rating. But it's been stuck at 5.3 for several years now.
Are the few "lost souls" (or, soul sick) people out there who hate this film so much against it that they give it a bad rating everytime they visit the site? I dunno...but let me just say that this is my favorite movie and it always lifts my spirits when I'm down. I've been watching it every year (or sometimes more often) since it came out in the spring of 1990. Maybe someone else will start another board on the subject of "favorite scene," but the sequence that always gets me is when Joe, shortly after being released from his horrible life and given the "brain cloud" notice, takes DeeDee out on a date...it all works, the music, the photography (the ferry across the harbor), the dialogue. Magical. One last comment--this has been my "litmus test" for girls I've dated. If, after a few dates, we watch this movie together and she hates it, I break up. No kidding....to me, if you don't get this movie, or refuse to open up to it, you are narrow minded and lost. That may be taking it too far, but I don't think so--luckily, only one of the 5 or 6 girls I've dated over the past 10 years has felt so strongly against the film. Most have loved it or (now that I think about it), pretended to love it, knowing my feelings about it.
I could go on but I'll leave other topics regarding Joe to other fans.

I too love this movie...however I can see people not liking it. It's not exactly a "great" movie but I like it alot and you like it alot so that's all that matters. right?

yey! i am not alone in this world. joe vs. the volcano changed my life when i first saw it... in the theatre no less. i was only 15, but i was hooked. i went back and saw it again two more times while it played for the very short three weeks at the cinema, and i bought the vhs as soon as i could.
the symbolism throughout the movie rocks... the subtle and in-your-face ones alike. as an interior designer studying to become an architect, i hear "god is in the details" all the time. this movie certainly supports that for me.

and on a side note, i don't think it is wrong for you to base your potential relationship factor on wether or not your partner likes a certain film. i do the same thing... with movies, books and music. i can't tell you how many boys have gotten the old heave-ho because they dissappointed me in the arena of taste. i am just suprised that you have managed to only lose one because of this movie.

I probably love this movie as passionately as you-if not more. I agree with you,it should have a higher rating but apparently there are many people out there who can't look past the silliness of the film and see the deep underlying messages. This movie changed my life.

Oh yeah, sorry dude, I'm a guy and I'm straight. (but my sister liked it too)

I love this movie. I think it is an amazing film for those who are ready to hear what it has to say. Some people are just not in the right place in their life to understand the powerful messages expressed in this movie.

Oh definitely. I grew up watching this movie, and not by choice. When it came out, I was only 6 years old... and my sisters made me watch it a lot. Of course, when you get older your tastes change, and at 17 I wanted to rewatch it for the pure nostalgic value of it. What I got was a real eye opener. The film is beautiful, and gave me such a phenominal feeling of euphoria. The scene on the chest raft was so breathtaking. Here he is, stranded at see, and as soon as he starts dancing around I knew he had finally learned to appreciate life. I really admire the subtle messages portrayed throughout, especially the jagged line that showed up every time his life took a new direction (my favorite reference was the lights on the volcano).

I think it was great. A wonderul soul searching movie that made me look out the window differently when it was over. I'm also going to make a recommendation. If you liked this movie so much, watch the recent "about schmidt" with Jack Nicholson. It's a great black comedy with an equally stunning theme of soul seeking.

I spent a long time hating this movie, and then a few weeks ago I saw the DVD release - and was immediately struck by how good a film it was! I think the problem initially was the atrocious VHS version that was going around here in the UK. It had clearly been hacked about by someone with no skill in editing, or liking for the film. The quality of the transfer was awful too. Now the DVD really shows the amazing visual power of the opening sequence, and the contrast with what followed.

I can only urge anyone who is wavering on this film to get the DVD version and bin the VHS one.

ps: Am I the only one who thinks the island is spookily similar to the one they used for 'Cast away'!?

This film is one of my favorites, and I'm glad that there are other people out there who were moved by it too. I've enjoyed reading your comments.

You really do have to be in a certain frame of mind to appreciate the story. People who don't have this connection to Joe's character just won't get it and will think its just a silly movie about some guy who jumps into a volcano. And I guess, on the surface, it does seem like a silly premise. But the movie really is so much more.

Honestly, my usual reaction to people who dismiss this film is that I think they're too shallow, but maybe they really just have to be in a certain place in their lives to really understand it.

The story of Joe is not only moving, its also quite funny. The whole thing about the islanders being almost addicted to orange soda cracked me up, and I thought that Lloyd Bridges (RIP) had some pretty funny lines in that apartment scene when he was trying to convince Joe to agree to his crazy deal.

Joe Versus the Volcano is definitely one of my favorite films. Every time I see it, it always lifts my spirits.

How refreshing to find other people who feel the same way I feel about this movie. I also count this film, along with maybe "It's a Wonderful Life," as my favorite movie. However, more than one person has told me that JVTV is the stupidest movie they've ever seen, which just amazes me. (They've obviously never seen "Fresh Horses" with Molly Ringwald!)

I think where you're at in life when you first see it has something to do with "getting" it or not. I saw it for the first time in the summer of 1990, just less than a year before graduating from college. I saw it two or three more times right away, then bought the VHS when it came out. I watched it at least annually for 6 or 7 years. I shared it with some friends last year; I don't recall any vehement protest, but I don't recall any real enthusiasm, either.

I really appreciate what this movie says about faith, and courage, and how to live one's life. Only a fairy tale could communicate these themes the way they are communicated in JVTV. I think when someone breaks out the "stupidest movie" judgment, it's because they're taking the movie literally, as opposed to treating it like a fable.

I think the most important factor in my loving this movie so much is its soundtrack. "16 Tons" - perfect! "Old Man River", "Blue Moon" - both perfect to set the mood of their respective scenes. I loved "The Street Where You Live" sung in Spanish - que bonita! "Come Go With Me" and "Good Lovin'" - just right! But maybe best of all, the original song, "Marooned Without You." That's one of the most beautiful, moving songs I've ever heard.

Exactly the opposite happens in Lost in Translation. This total junk gets over 8/10 but if you read the comments, most of them are clearly negative. How can this be? Well.. Who knows..
