Hanks not happy with Joe?

While Tom Hanks seems to embrace the second and third parts of the rom-com trilogy he and Meg Ryan have made (Sleepless & Mail), I've never heard him talk (let alone praise) this little gem of a film. Anyone know why?

reply

I tried to catch the part of his Inside the Actors' Studio to see what he said about it, but I always tune in too late. I've heard rumors (mostly on these boards) that he is embarrassed by the movie because it was something of a flop, and is almost universally crapped on (by idiots - recent years have proven that it is a wonderful movie). He often lightheartedly makes fun of Bosom Buddies and Turner and Hooch, but I've never heard him make even a reference to this movie.

Definitely!!!

I reckon it leaves everything he's done since in the dust.

Well maybe not everything. I suppose Philadelphia was better than a kick in the legs.

I wish Tom Hanks would get over himself a bit and go back to doing some light-hearted films where he can show off his comedic talents.

Don't you miss hearing that hilarious bark of a laugh? Or that screwed up face when he's shocked or squinting or confused? Or that deep-and-husky favourite saying of his - "Allright, that's it!"

I miss fun, Vintage Tom!!

Woody from Toy Story is the closest we've got to see (or hear, as the case may be) his sense of humour of recent years, and that doesn't even really count cause we don't get to see him!

I agree completely!

I agree, especially about Catch Me if You Can. That movie sucked.

Long live Joe Vs. The Volcano. It just goes to show you not to necessarily trust popular opinion.

Im sorry to tell you this people but this film SUCKED! The rating is a little too kind. Forrest Gump for a start is a classic that will be around for many many years to come, this film is only seen as one of Hanks's early roles. Very poor script, not funny at all and just dull. I like You've Got Mail, thats funny. Catch Me If You Can is an amazing film that is just amazingly fun to watch, I mean the 'knock knock' was hilarious. Heres my fav Hanks films.

1. Saving Private Ryan (Of course, its just the best war film ever, Apocalypse Now SUCKS!)

2. Road To Perdition (Excellent film, its no Goodfellas or Godfather but its sure is amazing)

3. Forrest Gump (What a film, I neednt say more)

4. Catch Me If You Can (I just thought this film was so fun to watch, I love it)

5. Green Mile (Although a very sad film they are normally the most dramatic and its a very good film)

I know ive missed Philadelphia but I like these better. Im sure ive missed one of his masterpieces. I wouldnt say this is his worst film because nothing is as bad as Dragnet, that SUCKS!

Hanks is amazing and one day he will become a true legend like
De Niro.

May i ask how old you are?

reply

May I ask why you want to know how old I am. Do you believe this film to be a classic such as As Good As It Gets or Me, Myself and Irene, hardly anyones heard of it, its crap! And I think you are REALLY FUNNY if you believe it is obsurd to say that Saving Private Ryan is the best war film ever, your practically a comedian. I loved Catch Me If You can, shoot me! It was an easy going fun film to watch, I'm sorry if not every film is about someone having their guts ripped out or their husband being shot. I'm positive that their is a film out their that you love but many people slag it off. The Fast And The Furious I also love, again its fun to watch, I wouldnt say its the best film ever because that spot is reserved for Goodfellas and Star Wars, do you have anything to say about them? Sarcastic prick!

Im not trying to stir things up, why would I? Just because someone has a different opinion doesnt mean there wrong. Obviously I have a point otherwise you would say something alot more obout the debate than that I am an *beep* I have a point and you cant handle it. O well, grow up!

Anyway, to respond to a person with a little more than a pea for a brain. I believe that religion is the most destructive thing on the planet because it doesnt do anything but cause destruction. Look at all the bad things that have happened in this world due to religion, for example, the whole Israel situation, 9/11 and the London attacks. And these people are all doing this for Allah and God, please, you are very weak minded to worship a fairytale. I believe the so called Jesus to have been a very clever person who can trick the mind, for instance David Blain, people couldnt explain these things so they worshipped him. I could go on for longer but cant be @rsed.

Just because you like system of a down (as I do) doesn't mean everything they say about "free thinking" is absolute truth and that no group of people can be right.

Religion came into it when callitt typed 'why is religion the most destructive thing on the planet?', thats when it came into it prick! Also calling me a b i t c h stills make you look a bigger fool than before as you still have yet to say why, you are obviously a troll. And I dont like System Of A Down, note how they spell it with one c, that whole sort of music sucks, I mean wheres the lyrics? Again making you look a prick people so stop trying.

Let me ask you a question. Have you seen any movies made before 1980? I know you saw Star Wars, but what about, say, Casablanca, or Gunga Din? Have you ever seen a silent movie? As for clever movies like Catch Me If You Can, which I did like, have you ever seen Charade? Or Kind Hearts and Coronets?

I actually do believe Joe Vs. the Volcano to be a modern classic. There are boundless examples of symbolism throughout, not to mention Abe Vagoda.

Please, try something besides The Fast and the Furious, like, say The Adventures of Robin Hood with Errol Flynn.

A mind is a terrible thing to waste, especially on most of the Crap Hollywood passes as entertainment.

I think Tom Hanks might be one of those people who think that only dramas can be great -- that comedies are just silly pieces of fluff you watch to pass the time.

If so, I'm guessing that the "5 good films" he's referring to are the relatively dramatic ones: Philladelphia, Apollo 13, Saving Private Ryan, The Green Mile, and Road to Perdition.

Then again . . . maybe Hanks was just being modest when he said he's made five good films. Maybe he really likes more of his films than five, but he's afraid if he admits it he'll seem full of himself.

Here are my top five favorite Tom Hanks movies:

1 - Joe Versus the Volcano
2 - You've Got Mail
3 - Big
4 - Catch Me if You Can
5 - The Green Mile

Here are my five LEAST favorite Tom Hanks movies:

1 - The 'burbs
2 - Volunteers
3 - Turner & Hooch
4 - Bonfire of the Vanities
5 - The Man with One Red Shoe

Back to the subject at hand.....why is Hanks not happy with Joe?

Hanks was coming off a series of commercial flops that started with Punchline and ended with Bonfire of the Vanities....JVtV got wedged between these flops (and for the record, I really liked Punchline--very good, underrated performances from Hanks and Sally Field).

The streak of flops ended with "A League of Their Own" in 1992 and Sleepless in Seattle and Philadelphia came out the following year--thus announcing the "new Tom Hanks."

So Joe Versus the Volcano failed to catch on, and Hanks reacted by making fun of it (which he did in an interview I saw in the late '90s). I lost a little respect for him. He should stand by this movie. It's his best work--no question.

Well I gotta go now Duane.....I'm due back on the planet Earth

reply

I read in an interview that Tom said he does not regret any films he has done because at the time they were good choices and he had fun making them. He certainly doesn't regret Joe. If anything, that movie started the Hanks/Ryan duo and no one is better than them when it comes to genuine chemistry!

I remember that I saw (years ago) an episode of SNL where Tom was, you know, the guest of the night. In that episode there was a sketch called somenthing like "the SNL fifth timers Club" (or something like that) where Tom hanks was in this lobby/lounge along with some veterans of SNL such as Steve Martin. I remember very well a line of this sketch where Steve Martin, greeting an emabarassed Tom Hanks who just got his way in the club, saying very sarcastly: Welcome to the SNL fifth timers club Tom, eventually you got it! I knew that you'd done it one day... even though after Joe versus the Volcano I had some doubts!"

That was the day I realized that JVV had been a flop in USA...

(BTW in Italy this movie is pratically unknown - never got his way in theaters, just broadcasted couple of times very late at night).

I love it and I still keep a VHS of it!

reply

It's definitly my favorite Tom Hanks movie, I have watched it more times than all the others combined and am quite puzzled (actually as I write this post/review I am less puzzled) as to why it is not on tv anywhere close to as much as Sleepless In Seattle and You've Got Mail are, they seem to be on at least once a month and Joe Vs. The Volcano has rarely, if ever been broadcast, at least I have never seen it on tv. Puzzling because if it was simply because that it was a flop at the cinema it would still, in my opinion, be perfect fodder for tv, since more people would tune in to see the stars they didn't see at the theatre and the story is entertaining enough, and it's even a 'cult classic' to some degree. I have seen Volunteers and the 'burbs enough times on tv to know a flop when I see it haven't you?

OK, and now is the part where you might tune out and think I am just nuts and maybe I am, but here goes anyway.

Joe Vs. The Volcano is too good, it is too positive. You, the true fan of this movie are that person that Patricia is talking about when she says "My father says that almost the whole world is asleep. Everybody you know. Everybody you see. Everybody you talk to. He says that only a few people are awake and they live in a state of constant total amazement."

Face it, too much of real life is depicted, oh so poeticly, at the begining of the movie, you trudge to work and work is, for most of us, uncomfortable but we put up with it, always wishing for the courage to fill our hearts and minds until they burst but we cower in our jobs because to take that risk, that leap of faith, we would risk losing everything, our material posessions, our standing in the community, in the flock, in the herd.

The concept of a meaningfull life is a deep one, one that possibly crosses all of our minds from time to time, why are we here on this planet? to toil? perhaps to be brave?

Breaking out of depression and hypochrondria are amazing victories, and at the risk of sounding like a tin-foil-hat wearing lunatic uber-leftwing nut with a conspiracy theory, if I advertised medicine on tv and essentially encouraged people to assume their general malaise was due to a problem that a pill could cure, I wouldn't necessarily want to promote the idea of a miricalous, free, cure (being in control of your own life and death)...and suicide is not good for business either.

Suicide, while abhorant for the obvious and culturally ingrained reasons, stands as an option that makes us realise our inherent biological freedoms. Does the soul live after the body dies? Remember that Joe had a spiritual awakening in the movie, but not necessarily a religious one. Could this movie have angered some people in it's somewhat casual use of suicide for personal gain? How many people out there are on the brink of suicide but only have horror movies to contemplate? How often is suicide given a positive touch? Could this idea, no matter how extreme it obviously is, be 'too much freedom' for a world run by religion and business?

Tom Hanks may not be one of those people who are 'awake' but he sure did a great acting job in the movie, my guess as to why he doesn't gush about it is not because it was a flop, but because he has been encouraged to not do so, perhaps not directly but with subtle pressure from the industry.

It is controversial, suicide is not to be taken lightly in this world where people are consumers first and individuals second. Big pharmacuetical companies don't want to make people question wether they are hypochrondriacs or not, religions don't want to lose customers to the idea of a God not associated with a branded religion and business doesn't want to promote the idea that our lives are not necessarily dependant on our jobs.

Business, religion and especially those that advertise on televison may not see Joe vs. The Volcano as a harmless romp and thus less 'controversial' Hanks movies are shown instead of this one and Tom Hanks is just going with the flow and downplaying his job in Joe Vs. The Volcano but I know that I like to think that he treasures it as much as we do!

reply

Great, wonderful, insightful post. You really summed it up about suicide quite nicely.

There is an interesting story that the Greek statesman Solon related about Croesus, King of Lydia.

Croesus asked him if ever he had known a happier man than he.

And Solon replying, Yes, Cleobis and Biton, who were loving brothers, and extremely dutiful sons to their mother, and, when the oxen delayed her, harnessed themselves to the wagon, and drew her to Juno's temple, her neighbours all calling her happy, and she herself rejoicing; then, after sacrificing and feasting, they went to rest, and never rose again, but died in the midst of their honour a painless and tranquil death.

The two son's had reached their Zenith, so they committed Suicide.

Interesting thought.
