Once you know that the volcano represents fear, the movie is easy to comprehend.

i like you're interpretation. what does the duck represent? this movie is *beep* magnificent.

All I can think of, regarding the duck, is that it is similar to Joe tossing his hat away. The hat tossing signifies the beginning of a big change in Joe's life. I see the ducks as meaning that a change has occurred and Joe has "floated" or survived it.

I'm probably wrong about that, but that's how I interpret it.
