Meg Ryan X 3!?

Why does Meg Ryan have three parts in this movie?

reply

The casting of Ryan in three roles follows the three-act structure of the film. She plays a character in the office, the post-diagnosis/pre-volcano sequence, and the sailing-to-the-island act. Think of the three characters as one love interest for Joe; they develop through the movie as Joe does. The first two aren't right for Joe, but then again not even JOE is right for Joe! It's only after the journey is over that he's complete, and ready for his true love.

I have a question for you: would the movie have been better if three actresses had been used?

reply

That's a very good question. I think it would be a complete different movie.

I knew of course that Meg Ryan played all three parts for a reason, I just never really understood it. But doesn't Joe tell each of them that he feels as if he has seen them before? So the movie wouldn't be better with three actresses, just a little less strange. That would however make it worse!

Only just Meg Ryan "born" and raised into this earth to make this 3 roles. Cuz there´s no other way this Partick Shanley´s masterpiece works so well if doesn´t have Meg Ryan, neither other actress went into their movie project...

i thought the 3 megs was all about fate, that because he felt like he knew them somewhere before, that fate was telling/ showing him the way to his true love ie meg 3. and that stuff about progression through his character

MAY.. be the John P. Shanley listened to the 1977´ hit love song of the Commodores
"Three Times A Lady"? when he sought inspiration at Meg Ryan to play roles?

But had he listened to "Brick House," would we have got Dolly Parton instead?
