Cars blowing (spoilers)
Do you think it is related to a car having killed his kid? Cars are heavily linked to random death in the movie.

Works for me.

I took the film to represent purgatory. You can either go to heaven or hell from there. I assumed that the guys who got blown up went to hell, while Tim Robbins wound up going to heaven at the end.
Just my personal take. I think the film kind of leaves it open to interpretation.
I think it had more to do with the war, like explosions that were actually happening at the time, but good point about the car killing his kid.
There are a couple other blown up cars shown in the movie, just sitting in the street. Pretty neat effect on the atmosphere.
Also, I always assumed his kid was hit with a Ford LTD, the same car that the demons/army guys drive erratically, but we never get to see that for sure. Can't make out what kind of car hits the bike at all in the flashback scene at the end.
Good topic.
