According to Lyne's audio commentary, test screenings indicated that the initial version of the film was overwhelming for the audience. In response, about 20 minutes of disturbing scenes, mostly from the last third of the film, were removed from the final cut. I think this is one of those instances, like Rosemary's Baby, where less becomes more. We didn't need demonic overkill. I think the director's preferred cut is his theatrical edition.🐭
Agreed. Too often people assume that a director isn't happy with their final cut. Or that a longer version is somehow the director's cut.
Peter Jackson is a good example of someone who has specifically said, the shorter version of the Lord of the Rings movies are the actual director's cuts. The extended version were made for the fans who wanted more, but the ones that were in movie theaters are the stories he wanted to tell.
The only deleted scene that I liked was the transformation of Jezebel into Jacob towards the very end of the film. It was a really brilliant way of showing how all the beings and people - both objects of fear and desire, were projections of Jacob's own mind.
The other deleted scenes (Jacob's false "cure", subway rape scene, etc) don't really add very much to the movie, so I don't see the need to put them into a director's cut version.
