People only watch this to see Tim Curry playing a clown
From what I've seen, Curry's only clown role is this, and while it's memorable, it is NOT Pennywise, no matter how much he says he is.
Let me put it this way, this Pennywise is never seen actually killing anybody, only intimidating them at best and making jokes at the same time, it is really not an accurate portrayal of Pennywise from the novel AT ALL. He doesn't actually attack, not that we see, only grab an arm and move menacingly towards a girl, then it cuts away. He grabs a Loser by his clothing and shouts at him, but I believe that's the worst he ever does. And no-one has any defence for the awkward shower scene, either: what did Pennywise do with Eddie? Just stand there in the hole staring at him, and then crawl away? Cos Eddie sure couldn't get away, unlike Richie.
The fault is the target audience for this TV miniseries, sanitised of everything that made the novel a HORROR novel to the point where it's basically a dumbed down version for little children. Not really surprising, since everyone who praises this miniseries saw it for the first time as a child. I would've loved to see Tim Curry graphically rip an arm off, or a head, or just chow down on someone's face.
But that's not why people like this miniseries. They like it because Tim Curry is basically playing Ronald McDonald, or indeed any family-friendly clown. It sure isn't because he's meant to be a killer shapeshifting entity (who doesn't even do either of those things) from another dimension.
