When Harry is sneaking up to Sutton's house, he hears Gloria moaning with delight when she is with Sutton. Can anyone explain why she would be enjoying herself that much when Sutton is a slimy, unattractive and disgusting man who is blackmailing her and ruining her life?
Are you sure? As she runs out in the dark, you can't see much, but it looked more like Gloria than Dolly. Also, as the car pulled away out back with the girl in it, it appeared to be somewhat of a "junker", as opposed to the kind of car Dolly would be driving (I think in the end they show Dolly and Harry driving in her big Cadillac convertible). Additionally, the shoes that he picks up look more like the summery type of stuff Gloria wore throughout the movie (and if they were Dolly's shoes why would he even bother to take them out of there - he wouldn't have cared too much about protecting her).
But the main reason I am almost certain it is Gloria is that when Harry and Sutton are fighting, Sutton makes some comment like "She ain't half bad for someone who goes both ways" (or some similar comment).
It was definitely Dolly with Sutton not Gloria but Madox thought that it was Gloria. He took the shoes and disposed of them to protect Gloria but realised they were not hers when they were summoned by Dolly after her husband died.
Because Dolly paid Sutton to say it! There is a scene where Madox says to Dolly "Sutton didn't really know about the fire did he" which tells us that Sutton and Dolly are in cahoots.
While it definitely wasn't Gloria with Sutton at that time Madox takes the shoes, that does not mean that he had not forced Gloria to have sex with him in the past. Keep in mind, Sutton's blackmail had been going on for at least a year.
Sutton was using his Harry's feelings for Gloria to goad him into doing something stupid (I don't think Sutton expected to end up dead). I think there was an alliance between Dolly and Sutton to either A) get all the bank money from Harry, or B) pry Harry and Gloria apart or C) all of the above. Sutton playing along when Harry thought Gloria was in bed with him, plus Dolly leaving those particular shoes behind could not have been a coincidence. Dolly didn't seem like the type to run screaming from the room just because she was caught in a compromising position, that was a bit of theatre cooked up for Harry's benefit. Maybe Dolly was even hoping that Harry would end up killing Sutton to get him out of the way.
There aren't many movies you can still talk about plot twists 15 years later and still not have all the answers.
The mystery woman with Sutton is heard to say "my face!" as she runs out. The next time we see Dolly she has a fresh wound on her face. Also, re: the shoes, remember the scene when we first meet Dolly (& when she first meets Harry) she comments on Gloria's shoes and says she has a pair just like 'em. Then we see Gloria wearing them again, right (seconds later in movie time) after Harry throws them in the swimmin' hole - obviously those were Dolly's shoes, not Gloria's!
Changing the subject a bit, I'm impressed with William "Sutton" Sadler's range as an actor - he's done quite a lot but it's hard to imagine two parts as different as Sutton vs. the father on Wonderfalls - an uptight rich Northern doctor! So many actors seem to just play themselves in each part - range like Sadler's shows real acting chops.
Virginia "Dolly" Madsen gets kudos in that department too - check her out in Sideways - as different as can be. That's acting!
That was definately Dolly alright, pretending to be Gloria because there was no way in the world would Gloria stoop that low as to lay up with that slimy, nasty-looking dirty bum Sutton, he looked like a guy who doesn't even shower, too disgusting-looking for her taste. She was too refined to go that far and if she would decide to go to bed with a guy, it would be Harry or someone like him or better.
Remember, there's only two things to do in the town and Dolly's not a TV watcher. Dolly wasn't getting much action with Harshaw's heart-condition and having been spurned by Johnson. Sutton might not be her first choice, but her "high class" is but a thin veneer. Plus, without her having an affair with Sutton, how do we explain the fact that Dolly and Sutton were even in communication with one another?
Yes, I agree. He probably coerced her to submit to gynecological exams as part of his twisted medical fetish tendencies. She would have no choice but to get on the table, spread her legs, place her feet in the stirrups and comply to his every whim.
No. It was definetly Dolly. In the final scene she had a mark on her face which resulted from the slight injury of Harry and Sutton having a brawl. Also when Harry and Gloria go to meet Dolly, he notices that Gloria still is wearing the shoes she originaly had. Despite the fact that he disposed of them at the lake in the earlier scene.
After that scene when we don't really see who the woman is , and the camera shows the high heels the woman left , high heels which appartenly both the young cutie and blond sexy wife had ; i really expected a twist that Don Johnson character found out that the young cutie and the red neck were actually together and were playing him / trying to scam him , because it seemed too obvious too simple that those were the sexy blond wife's shoes , but actually they were her's , lol .

The girl obviously had blonde hair. I doubt she was going to take her ostentatious car to such a place. There's a scene in which Dolly notices Harry noticing Gloria's shoes, then later on she surprises him in an elevated car in the car lot and points out that she has the same shoes that he noticed earlier on Gloria.
Harry thought that it was Gloria who was leaving, which was why he hid the shoes. He was surprised to find out later it was actually Dolly, which is why there is an emphasis placed on him noticing that Gloria still has her pair like that and she's wearing them near the end of the film. Sutton wasn't having sex with Gloria right at the moment but there's a possibility that he had done so earlier and he wanted to anger Harry by referencing this.

Precisely right. Which begs the question, why would Don Johnson's character think it was Jennifer Connely boning Sutton with delight?? Forget about the shoes and envelope of money he found in Sutton's place, no way would the innocent Jennifer be huffing and puffing. To me, it made no sense for him to even think it!
There is nothing in the film to build a hypothesis that Sutton not only extorted money from Gloria but her sexual favors as well. Gloria is not that kind of girl. She is the only character with any class in the entire picture with the exception of perhaps the blind man. This viewer is of the opinion that Gloria would leave town before she would submit to Sutton's carnal desires. The fact that Gloria is pure is the reason that Madox could never possess her. Even though Dolly is more of a low-life than Madox, them driving off together is the perfect ending.
