For the past 30 years I always thought that was a very dramatic scene where Kevin realizes the old man is actually a nice person despite being emotionally broken. However I always thought the scene would have been better if it had incorporated some fart jokes. I'm very glad that Disney corrected this in Home Sweet Home Alone.

Heheh... fart jokes.

All kidding aside, that scene kind of redeems the film a little. Sure, the conversation favors the child which makes sense from a film making standpoint, but Roberts Blossom did a fine job of making that scene work. He's one of those character actors who just improve everything they're in.
