Lillly's line about stealing

When Bobo asks Lilly if she's stealing much, and she says something like,

"A person that don't look out for himself is too dumb to look out for anybody else."

and

"...if he doesn't steal a little, he's stealing big."

This has stuck with me over the years, since I first saw it. I think of it a lot with co-workers and people who I've supervised. And I think that there's some truth to it.

I dunno. Those lines just seemed like nice-talk with Bobo. Like grifter's Hallmark Cards.

It's an axiom in the drug world.

It's very true. Everyone steals at some point in their life. Some just more than others.

Those are very good lines, I think verbatim from the book.

"the best that you can do is fall in love"

I agree with the original poster.

Keep in mind that Lilly (Angelica Huston) handles and deals with a lot of cash at the race track. With so much large currency (not just $10 or $20 bills, but $100 bills) around, it's pretty hard not to get tempted.

In that scene with Bobo, Lilly even admits that she "clips a buck" here and there. And Bobo actually is smiling, which implies that he expects that from any of his couriers. Lilly is trying to justify that she takes a few dollars in order for her to survive.

It is small talk between Lilly and Bobo, but I'm a bit suprised that it takes place shortly after Bobo has just punched Lilly in the gut and "punishes" her by burning her hand with his lit cigar.

Of course, near the end of the movie, Bobo finds out that Lilly has definitely been "stealing big" from him when it's discovered that she has stashed away so much money in her car trunk.
