During what era did The Grifters take place?

Does anybody know? Sorry, I haven't read the book. There were parts that seemed very old school. And the clothes. Then there was Cusack's mullet. But the cars looked like early '70s. Can anybody help?

There was a throwback L.A. noirish vibe to the film, but I'm pretty sure it was supposed to take place around the time it was filmed (1989).

I noticed all the 70s cars too! But all the cars that were just driving on the streets were from modern times, so very inconsistent -- like much of the film.

And the women always wearing scarves over their heads . . . ? The last time I saw that was on my grandmother in the 70s.

In the book it takes place around 1963.

Lily's Seville was from 1980-1985. Cusak's K car was made between 1980-1991 and the city buses looked to be 1980-81 vintage. I did however, see some later model cars in the freeway scenes but it'd be very difficult and expensive to orchestrate period accuracy there.

I don't love her.. She kicked me in the face!!
