Anybody else's favorite movie of all time?

Is The Grifters anybody else's favorite movie of all time or is it just me? This is, without a doubt, the single best film I have ever seen.

reply

I agree. I love this film.

reply

Not my favorite, but I bought it, and will watch it a couple times a year.

reply

no, it was utter crap. Boring from start to finish.

Being a huge movie fan, john cusack fan, annette benning fan, and anjelica huston fan I can say with absolute certainty that I was completely bored and very dissapointed and I have now watched it 3 times all with seperate people who felt the same.My biggest question... where is the CON?

SPOILERS****
It just reviews old cons they have done if you watch one of the first scenes you see her (lilly) picking up tickets off the table and then send them to bobo you know shes is stealing no big surprise later. Then the young girl tries to take all of lilly's money while reviewing her old cons of the past. Then lilly wants her son money and takes it after an accident, followed by a weird ending.

If you have ever seen movies like CONFIDENCE or THE PRIME GIG or MATCHSTICK MEN or THE STING or CRIMINAL or even to a extent THE ITALIAN JOB they all have much better twist and much more likeable and seemingly smarter charters than those found in this dreary bunch. Not to say their performances were bad but that was the mood of the film in general with very few laughs and agin very few cons if any which you can and will find in multitudes in those movies listed above.

One of my faves! It rocks! Love it! ^0^ Lilly kicks butt! And now i know another use for oranges...(twitches from the thought of it...oww...)

If this is the best you have seen then you should get out more often. This movie started out with something-Cast & premise and by the end had nothing left. Dropped it all. I hate watching till the end and then suddenly seeing the credits and thinking did I pass out somewhere what happened?
This is a nothing movie. 2 hours wasted

It's not my favorite movie of all time (that would be Rules Of The Game) but it ranks right up there as one of my faves - certainly one of the best neo noirs. I loved it from the first time I saw it in the theater.

Stephen Frears did a wonderful job with the Jim Thompson source material and the cast was fantastic. Still one of Cusack's best roles. Even the tiny bit parts are beautifully cast.

For the poster above who didn't get the con...you're kidding right? Good heavens. I don't mind if someone doesn't like it, but good heavens...

Just wanted to join in with everybody who loves this movie. I just saw it again for the first time in about 10 years and was blown away by how excellent it is. The final scene with Cusack and Huston belongs right up their in the cannon of classic movie scenes.

Also, this has one of the best film scores ever. The music fits the movie perfectly - strange, cynical, and nasty. A perfect film.

Elmer Bernstein did a superb job on this score, as he did on so many other films (To Kill A Mockingbird, Man With The Golden Arm et al).

It does mirror the irony, hunour and tension in the film, a feat not easily pulled off.

reply

oh yeah.. one of my faves.. and yeah easily one of John Cusack's best roles... and the end oh god the end of the film........

the only other neo noir film which is as nasty in tone is probably "All This and Fireworks Too' with Billy Zane and Gina Gershon and brother/sister lovers evil bad people... (oooh I hope I got that title right) dark as hell but great.

Annette Benning is fantastic in this film.. don't know why it took Hollywood SOOOOO long to realize what a great actress she is.. .and Angela Huston is always perfect
