What could've been...
The flashback sequence in this makes me wish somebody would remake The Getaway (also written by Jim Thompson, in case you're wondering what I'm on about) with the surreal, horror how of an ending.
I know it's not exactly the same thing, and a "simple" flashback is easier to communicate visually than what goes on at the end of The Getaway, but it was so well directed by Frears, and acted by JT Walsh, makes me long for a director with the sack and touch to do the eding of TG. Two versions and no ending yet! IMO it's for a lot to do with why neither was particularly well received. Both versions are straight heist films. Thompson'sstory still better than most even without the ending, but those types of films are dime a dozen.
