Only a 7.0 rating here!??

What, are you kidding me!? This movie is brilliant. One of the best film noirs I've ever seen. And all of the lead actors are outstanding. Especially Houston. As great as Kathy Bates was in "Misery", Houston turned in a better performance and deserved the Oscar that year.

7 out of 10 IS a pretty good rating. 5 being AVERAGE, 7 being above average. Personally I'd give it an 8.5, not quite a 9, if half points were acceptable. But 7 is certainly fair. There are a lot of movies that are 10 to me, but I understand why they're not a 10 for everyone else. And I dunno...Bates really did deserve what she got for Misery.

I can't understand your crazy moon language.

You can easily get the ratings up. Fans need to come on here daily or weekly and vote and the more news associated with the film that makes it to IMDB the better the ratings go too. It's not that nobody thinks the film isn't good enough, its just all about activity. I know because I co-run a site for another actor and he did an indie film that could barely get a distribution deal but the fans came together to promote it and now its got like 9 ratings or something.

Thank you, THANK YOU, Daytripping! I've always felt that Anjelica's extraordinary performance should've taken the trophy that year. Kathy Bates is a great actress, one of this country's best, but her Annie Wilkes was not her best performance, and doesn't measure up to Anjelica's iconic Lily. Only Barbara Stanwyck could've approached her in that role. It's a spectacular achievement the academy should've recognized.

For the record, I like Whoppie Goldberg, but Bening should've taken the supporting prize that year.

I agree with the Oscar debate.
Kathy Bates has said herself that she had "too much fun" playing Annie Wilkes, whereas Dolores Claiborne damn near took all she had. THAT was the role that should have won Bates an Oscar, just as The Color Purple should have given Goldberg HER Oscar, leaving Annette Benning a better chance at it for playing Moira in The Grifters.
However, both Huston and Benning received a good of deal of accolades for this film. The winning Oscar may have overlooked them that year, but no one else did.

9*

i think the rating problem with older-modern movies such as this one, is that current 1st time viewers just see the 'dated' parts of it :

the pacing of the action, lite-weight car expolsions, lack of smartphones, head scarves and 70s cars in this one, what eva it is ,
So they rate it lower than say a contemporary equivalent movie to the subject movie.

quick case examples :
Dirty Harry only gets 7.8
Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia 7.6

like ... wtf? these were utterly ground breaking originals

but every fan-boys fantasy GoT gets 9.9 or wherever its up to at present

ok these are not noir/ con / urban drama / movies , but point remains ...

I think that 7 is too much. I gave it 6/10. It was ok but a disappointment.
