shareI guess I can believe that as Hill tried to get away from the mob when he went into the service but it was already too late as a young man. As a kid he wanted to go down the path of least resistance which was ditching school and working for the Vario's. The excess drugging probably was as much to do with coping with the fact that most mafia associates have rather short expiration dates as it was to do with simply partying. People tend to look at Goodfella's as having a romantic notion of the mafia whereas they should be looking at it as a cautionary tale as intended. Paul Vario may have done well as a capo but was it worth being locked up from time to time? Yeah, he had a certain amount of power while inside prison but it also made it easier for any enemies to target him. He no doubt had to pay for his safety while inside.
shareThis movie, Scarface, and a few others have been criticized for romanticizing a criminal lifestyle. I always wonder if there are a large number of people who only watch the first half of these films, then turn them off.
