Do you think this should be rebooted?

Personally I loved this film and I'm not normally pro remake, but I think this is one of those films that could use one.

Thoughts?

At this point, perhaps. Apparently the rights to make a Dick Tracy film is tied up and in litigation currently which is why a sequel to this was never made.

Yes. Although I will admit this was a pretty good movie, there needs to be a Nolanized type reboot.

I'd go for a reboot. Limit the number of villains. Make everyone more realistic instead of over-the-top stupid. Give Tracey a backstory.

I take it you've never read any of the source material. Do you even know anything about the characters? Pruneface? Flattop? Mumbles? Big Boy, for crying out loud? Over the top stupid is kind of the point. The things you're talking about would effectively ruin the character's world.

No I haven't. My only exposure to Dick Tracy was this movie and the accompanying NES video game and needless to say it was forgettable.

I'm sick and tired of Nolanized comicbook universe, in fact most people are just sick and tired of comics at this point.

I'd like to see a Dick Tracy reboot with a different tone. Dick Tracy just seems like a character whose story should be told from different perspectives.

When this film first came out, the story's black and white sense of morality and clean cut protagonist were already cliches of the past. It was an affectionate homage with a stylistic kitsch. I think the movie was hit and miss, but the overall tone worked really well.

For a modern perspective, I think it should be more noirish in tone and a little more serious. I also think that the camera work, but not the content, should be like Sin City. And while I might do away with the trench coat in favor of a black business suit, I'd still want to keep the yellow fedora. I'd also still want to see a lot of yellows, reds, and greens. Lastly, I'd want some action with a little bit of a bite to it. It should still be PG, but upper end PG.

I think it should still be aimed at young audiences, but it should make them feel like they're watching something mature. And it should be intelligent enough in its writing that adults respect the film as well.

@pointdexter22 I think The Lone Ranger tanking put a stop to that happening anytime soon. Adaptations of 1930's serials aren't in right now. But never say never.

In this case, the film should be rebooted, because despite the 1990 film being a big financial success, the film is pretty forgotten in today's standards and while this film is still visually impressive today, the film lacked a better plot.

The story was too thin, Warren Beatty's performance was rather wooden and it dragged, Big Boy's plans weren't clearer enough, because we really don't know what he's trying to accomplish and there was not enough action to entertain the kids. I mean, it wants to be this fun action movie for kids, but it doesn't really offer any except for at the beginning and towards the end. It also doesn't know whether it wants to be for kids or adults.

The best things about the film were the colors, the special effects, Stephen Sondheim's songs, Danny Elfman's score, Al Pacino as Big Boy and the villains. It was heavily a missed opportunity and this was why it's not as popular as the film it was trying to capitalize on, "Batman". So, in these terms, a reboot is absolutely necessary and it could bring new life to the Dick Tracy character.

I've done the calculations, and, since 1989 there has been a Batman movie released on average every 3.5 years(!).

Dick Tracy needs another run. Maybe give it to Del Toro?
