How this Dick Tracy only have a 6.1?!

I know this movie isnt flawless, but come on, a 6.1 is really low! Despite story, or casting, or performances. The fact that this movie has an All Star Cast and some of the most inventive visually creative styles i've ever seen, i would have to give it like a 7.5 alone. On top of the fact that i loved the story, and thought that Beatty was perfect as the king of cool Dick Tracy, i would expect for this movie to have atleast a 7.7 on IMDb.

I guess i love this movie a bit too much then.

I'm a really big film nerd, own over a thousand movies, seen over a thousand more, have watched almost the entire filmography's of the greats like Scorsese, Kubrick, Hitchcock, Bergman, Kurosawa, Fellini, etc.

And I'd still put this movie in my top 100 of all time. 9/10, easy. More fun than almost any other flick I can think of.

I agree, i too have seen almost the entire filmography of Scorsese, Kubrick, Hitchcock, Bergman, Kurosawa, and Fellini, and i too think that Dick Tracy is an excellent film. I just didnt want be one of those that thinks it deserves a 10/10, so i kept it moderate with a 7.7. But i agree, it's one of my all time favorite films, easily a 9/10

I largely agree. It's gorgeous, it's an honest tribute, and the performances are good. I came here expecting to see a rating of seven-point-something. 6.1 was a surprise.

I agree. This film is extremely underrated.

They're all the ones who played the horrible NES video game perhaps?

It swings for the seats and I totally admire a director with a vision who goes for it, but it has aged terribly.

1. The prosthetics are ridiculous. Not cool like Batman, just silly. Probably shoulda been done in the CGI era.

2. See #1.

3. See #1.

Why? I came into this game for the action, the excitement... Listen, kid, we're all in it together.

Some of the prosthetics aren't fantastic, but that adds to the charm. Honest to god, with CGI dominating EVERYTHING, I think CGI would cheapen the charm of this movie.

The prosthetics, sets, matte paintings etc. make this movie and set it apart

Exactly, this film is wildely original and extremely daring. The way they utilised matte painting, prosetetics, miniatures, makeup, set decoration, art direction and camera tricks is something to admire. I love this film, it's my favorite comic book movie of all time. (Yes above the wildely overrated The Dark Knight)

I agree with everything you wrote -except- for the prosthetics. They literally look like what they are: silly putty. If they were as cool as the mattes, costumes or the noire lighting, I'd be thrilled. But they're just awful, again compared with Batman or early CGI like The Mask. I won't beat this dead, fake horse anymore.

Heh, I dug the cartoonish "silly putty" look of the prosthetics. I find them complimentary to the film given how Beatty takes the "hard boiled" noir and satirizes it in a charmingly over-the-top manner. Based on the little I've seen of the comics, the villains looked ridiculous anyway, and it's made evident in the film a la the silly prosthetics.

It's self aware and that's what made it fun and charming. But from a cosmetic standpoint, I still like the look of them and find them quite charming regardless. I doubt I'd feel the same about CG renditions

I saw this film for the first time recently, and it has aged beautifully, in an age where CGI is dominating everything and making everything look bland and overbloated, DIck Tracy was extremel refreshing. The way they utilised matte painting, prosetetics, miniatures, makeup, set decoration, art direction and camera tricks is something to admire.

Yes the prostetics are ridiculous and silly, but so is every character of the comic book it is based on, this film is extremely true to the source material and that shows by adapting the crazy characters and making them look like they do.

I was shocked by the imdb rating for Tracy. This is a 10. One of the greatest comic book movies in film history. Great practical effects, an awesome comic book style version of the 1920s and cool old school gangster caricatures come to life. Al Pacino was also great in this film, almost as good a performance as his Scarface performance. I think Madonna may be the one factor that made people low-rate this film, but not sure why, it's probably her best movie role.

reply

agreed with everything you said.

Madonna was fine in the role, but she was the only downfall for me, if she was played by a proper actor i could call this film a masterpiece, now it's just one of the best comic book movies ever ;)

I agree, the 6.1 rating is way too low. But it's much better than what this movie was rated 10 or 12 years ago on here. I remember about 10 years ago it wasonly a 5.7. Proof that more people have learned to appreciate this movie as it gets older.

As far as comic book movies go this movie easily deserves a 7 or an 8. Only 1 or 2 things prevent it from being truly great.

8/10 for me. One of the best looking films of all time, and one of my favourite comic book films.

Madonna, and one too many musical montages are the film's only flaws.
