This movie SUCKED!

Could the kidnappers have been more incompetent and more poorly developed. They pretty much let their captives run around loose all over the place, talk on the phone to whomever, go out and drive around unsupervised, and pretty much talk back to them and do whatever they please. And when one of the captives tries to kill one of the captors, Rourke's character pretty much sides with the kidnap victim.

Moreover, Hopkins is such an *beep* you want one of the kidnappers to break his teeth out and shut that uppity daughter up as well. Hell, the boy was a punk too.

And what the hell is up with that FBI agent doing that ridiculous Southern accent? Where the hell is she supposed to be from, 19th century Georgia?

Stupid script and horrible performances all the way around. Cimino must have been so high on coke during this thing that he did not even bother to watch the dailys.

Man, I'm so glad someone mentioned that! I've seen this woman, Lindsay Crouse before, and she was fine...but what in the heck was this accent all about? What in the hell was the director thinking when he watched this going on? An FBI agent with a southern accent (and a bad one at that) in Utah! I mean...I adore Anthony Hopkins, but what was he thinking??? I'll bet he considers this one of his worst. Although I'm not crazy about Mickey Rourke...he was the best thing in the movie.

reply

Hopkins once listed Desperate Hours as one of his movie mistakes in an interview.

reply

I don't blame him. It was dumb.

reply

I've seen this movie on TV yesterday.
I waited for something interesting to happen. And then, the end.

There are too many incredibly dumb things in this movie to list them all...

It reminds me how good it is to see a BAD movie once in a while, so that you can even more appreciate other movies .

reply

What a coincidence , i watched this film on TV yesterday as well ...
However i think i may be the only person who liked the film ...

<And the family....sheesh! I have never seen a more obnoxious bunch in my life! In the earlier version the family was completely sympathetic and likable, in this version I swear I almost WANTED to see one of them or all of them get seriously smacked down at least once. >

I have to agree with you there, Blueharmon. Especially about Mae/Shawnee Smith. What a little spoiled brat she was! I liked Mimi and Hopkins OK, but the kids were just bad.

reply

Yeah, in addition to the accent, all she did was push everyone around. I couldn't figure that woman's angle out to save my life. I also loved that "command center" where they had those super-sized photos of the family, etc. The one that had Mickey Rourke on it had a big red X on it as if someone might forget what they were all supposed to be going for.

reply

This version is not upto the original with Fredrick March and Humphrey Bogart. Watch that one then you'll see how really lame this one is.

Nothing is more beautiful than nothing.

Agreed, Tecun.. and what about David Morse's character, after coming back from dumping the body in the river, he comes back all covered in blood. Then he tries to approach two females on the highway. Seconds later the police are on him lol

reply

~ This movie wasn't so great, and the plot didn't capitvate me. I must admit that the performances were good. I loved that Mickey Rourke was in it.

It's boring. I think this was meant to be a thriller of some sort? but there was no sense of suspense at all throughout the entire film. No scares, no surprises.

I tried to like this movie but yeah in the end, to put it as simple as possible it did indeed suck. The script is terrible, the pacing of the story is totally wrong and there's not a likable character in this movie. With such a cast and such a director, coming up with this end result is nothing less than completely shameful. Maybe the worst of it all is that in fact it gets gradually worse the more you get to the end. You start out with something that's mediocre and you end up with something that's just awful.

reply

I agree, the movie gets worse and more absurd as it goes along. The movie really insults the intelligence of the audience.

Several unintentionally funny scenes as well. One of the funniest is that I have giant blown up photos of the family & kidnappers already hanging in the command center and Mickey Rourke's looks like it came straight off of the cover of GQ.

reply

I agree this movie was crap

I'll say for this what I say for most soulless remakes, just stick with the original.
