Deadbeat at Dawn showed a hell of a lot more ingenuity and talent on Jim Van Bebber's part than Rodriguez pooled into El Mariachi. It's a shame that Van Bebber wasn't able to parlay this into more movies. I know he never wanted to go the Hollywood route, and even if he did he wouldn't have lasted too long there without compromising everything that made his stuff great, but you've got to look at this movie and think that, if comparisons are to be made, Deadbeat at Dawn beat Rodriguez at the micro-budget action movie game and then twenty years later is still a superior entry in the grindhouse throwback revival genre.
