shareWell if you want to be topical the only Americans were the Indians. The whites were relocated Europeans
shareBut America wasn't 'America' until the European colonists arrived and started calling it that. Before that the land was called many things, in many tongues, by many peoples. So really, Native Americans is not a very good term either. I would call them the 'Indigenous Peoples of what is now commonly referred to as the North and South American Continents'. Even that doesn't really work, because they aren't really indigenous. They migrated from Asia. Humanity did not originate in North America at all.
See what a useless exercise it all is.
I think the Canadians refer to them as First Nation people, which I always thought sounded better.

I agree, it does sound better. But do they call ALL Indians that? That wouldn't make sense. The native peoples of North America were never united. They were a fractious group of peoples, with little large scale organization. That's one of many reasons they were displaced. share
Well each tribe is considered its own little mini nation. They were the first people to settle in the land that is now referred to as North America/South America.
