...is it supposed to be Two Socks, or was he shot dead by the soldiers?

That wolf had a collar on it though and we never saw a collar on Two Socks, or one being put on.

We don't actually know that Two Socks is dead. We never see his body.

We see the soldier shooting at him. We hear a yelp. But we don't see a dead body.

I'd like to think that Two Socks was wounded and ran off, never to approach another man again.

It was Two-Socks spirit.

Two socks is shown curled up in the grass after he's been shot, and the implication is he was killed. The wolf at the end looks different than Two Socks. It seems to have thicker fur and a fuller frame.
