Question for those who have read the book: SPOILER

Right before the end credits, the movie says that just 13 years later, the last free band of Sioux Indians submitted to white authority in Nebraska. Does the book tell us what ultimately became of Stands with a Fist and Dances With Wolves? Or does it end at the same place the movie does? Is the book good? Would you say it is better or worse than the film?

reply

The book has a sequel which starts with Dances with Wolves and Stands with a Fist living together like Native Americans. Several characters from the original book are still alive. In the books, the tribe is Cheyenne, not Sioux, so the above did not apply to them.

Actually the book ends completely different from the movie. In the book, Dunbar wants to leave so Ten Bears informs him that it will stop snowing the next day so he can leave. It, however, doesn't stop snowing. Ten Bears is confused about this. When the snow still keeps falling, he goes to Dunbar and tells him that the reason it's still snowing is because Dunbar is meant to stay with the tribe (Comanche in the book). Dunbar stays with the tribe and the book ends.

When he made the movie, Kevin Costner changed the ending. I can't actually remember why he changed it so much, but I think it was because he wanted to make a statement on Native relations with the US Government.
