Avatar is Dances with Wolves in space w/ aliens.

As far as other historical films with visually stunning cinematography, a few off hand would be:
The Patriot
Braveheart
Gladiator
Saving Private Ryan

I'm sure there are other greats out there. Those are just the ones that come to me when it think of epic films.

I'm gonna go vomit now over Avatar being compared to Dances... LOL
