Or explain to them the strange way he found the fort when He arrives
It is better explained in the extended version, but some had been killed by Indian raiders or had taken off. The remaining soldiers had some sort of beef with their commander, that I didn't quite figure out what, and were living in those caves. The commander gathered all the men together and told them they were leaving as no reserves or supplies had come. They basically gave up. They left just days before John Dunbar arrived.
