$47.000.000 budget??

And in 1990?? This is insane... Where did the money go?? This should have costed 25 millions tops!
I mean, "Rain Man", 2 years ago, costed 25 millions! And I'm sure Hoffman (and Cruise, rising star) took a big check! How much money did Hanks, Griffith and Willis take? Remember, this is 1990!

The book rights. Bruce Willis got $5,000,000. Mel got $2,000,000 Tom Hanks (fresh off of Big) most likely got $5,000,000. Morgan Freeman made $1,000,000 the director most likely got $3-$6 million. Filming on location and rushing the filming through post production adds cost to the film.

Tom Cruise & Dustin Hoffman took points off the film "Rain Man" taking little salary and getting a %of all revenue! (Btw in 1988 Dustin was getting $8,000,000 a film). Later around 1991 Dustin sued MGM for money he was owed from RAINMAN

Hanks got 5,000,000 dollars for this one? In 1990? Wow...

Did Hoffman win?

They also built that court room for Morgan Freeman..

reply

Ha,ha... Aaahhh, why do you say that?

reply

it is true Morgan was in CA & did not want to travel

Where I come from the birds always sing a pretty song & there's always music in the air!

reply

That's absurd...Does he do that in all of his movies?? Making people built sets for him??
And do they build courts every time they have a court scene in a movie? Can't they go to a real court?
I don't remember the movie at all, but as I see here, it was shot in a real court:
http://www.imdb.com/search/title?locations=Criminal%20Courts%20Buildin g%20-%20100%20Centre%20Street%2C%20Manhattan%2C%20New%20York%20City%2C %20New%20York%2C%20USA&ref_=ttloc_loc_3

I refuse to believe that they built a whole court just because Freeman didn't want to travel 4 hours! Who is he, the King of Hollywood?? And this was 1990, he wasn't even THAT famous back then.

reply

They filmed the exterior only of the court. You can read alll about it in "The Devils Candy" its a book about the making of the film.

Filming on location can be a lot slower and more limiting than building on a soundstage. You typically have to shoot at night or weekends, and there's the cost of shuttling all that equipment and staff to the location (plus hotels). I like when they use real courtrooms, it can definitely add something.

It says in the trivia that Hanks was only paid one million dollars, while Willis got five million, even though all of his movies had lost money at that point. But he was a very recognizable star.

reply

No way Melanie got two million over Hanks one million, women are notoriously underpaid in the industry. Don't forget that Dustin and Warren Beatty got paid 25 million for acting and producing Ishtar!

reply

So that would be almost $90 million in today's dollars.
