Why was the spider removed from the original poster?
It's always something that's bugged me as I've never found a definitive answer. Does anyone here know?

shareI've wanted to know the answer myself. What little I remember from the time of it's release, had something to do with Charlotte's Web?? Can someone else help with this?
It was a really bad move because they removed the spider AND the web in the tree, so the poster art basically has no real connection to a movie about killer spiders.
I came here to ask the same question.
shareI remember reading something years ago about either DC/Warner getting pissy about it resembling the Batman poster/Bat Signal.
I'm probably missing something, Bear in mind this was YEARS ago
They said it was the greatest homoerotic novel since huckelberry finn - Mr macky
Some people, are in actuality so scared of spiders that they would freak out seeing the cover of the movie in a store, or on the poster.
I suspect the spider was removed after focus testing or complaints from people seeing it and freaking out.
You can find reports of people who have thrown objects at their television and broken the screen because a video or a commercial used an image of a roach or a spider crawling across the screen.
This is most likely why Raid uses little cartoon bugs for their advertising on television rather than real images of people dealing with bugs.
Yes, you might think it odd that people would watch a story that involved something that would freak them out, but it's the difference between KNOWING you're watching a movie, and subjecting yourself to something you're afraid of, and actually thinking the creature you're scared of is on a DVD or VHS cover that is several inches away from you.

good call
shareI thought I read at the time that surveys found that a great many people are scared of spiders and Hollywood Pictures was worried that they were putting out a film about spiders and no one would buy the video. So they removed the spider from the ads and if you read the synopsis on the back of the tape/disc there is no mention of spiders at all!! It always amazed me that they made this nice little thriller and wanted to conceal the subject matter.
shareLOOOOOOOOL, really! It's like "okay, I will make a film about something I think nobody wants to see, so I am pretending it is something else (or not telling what it is". Somewhat disingenuous, no? If people don't want to see spiders and would NOT watch the film if they knew they were in it, you know you will displease them, no matter what. Not a nice touch, right?
On the other hand, sometimes we must force people to watch the truth. But I think that this concerns different subjects than ... uhm, spiders.
The site called Impawards has the original poster with the spider: http://impawards.com/1990/arachnophobia.html
shareAfter the nationwide success o the movie, "Daphne" (the spider) thought it would be a good idea to get a BONUS on top o her Royalty payments with her being on the Poster and all.
It didn't go well.
hee hee, have a nice day
I was also wondering about this, I had the game for the Commodore Amiga and the box art was the original poster with the spider over the moon. I still remember looking from the game box to the VHS case.. "huh?"
From what i have seen, the bluray will also have the original artwork.
