Podcast on The Adventures of Ford Fairlane

The Projection Booth: Episode 75: Adventures of Ford Fairlane
Special Guest: Rex Weiner, Floyd Mutrux & Daniel Waters

It's booty time across the USA! We're discussing the ill-fated Andrew "Dice" Clay vehicle The Adventures of Ford Fairlane in which he portrays a rock & roll detective with a dirty mouth and a bad attitude.

We're joined in the Projection Booth this week by Toronto's very own Stuart "Feedback" Andrews, host of the Rue Morgue and Cinephobia Radio podcasts.

I didn't get to listen to all of the podcast, but I disagree with a lot of what they said.

The movie didn't do well financially mostly due to the fact that Dice was being boycotted at the time. If the movie would've been a hit, it would've spawned at least one sequel.

One thing they brought up was that Dice was basically playing the Dice character. Dice plays the same character in all of the movies he was in up to that point. Are Dice and Ford the same character, yes to an extent. But the Dice character is a little more extreme. And as for Dice using some of his lines from his act, I don't see that as a big deal. I've seen quite a few comics do that in movies.

The problem with the podcast is that they are looking at the movie from the present and not thinking about what it was like when the movie was made. They had a problem with Vince Neil who is in the movie for just opening. The movie isn't about hair bands. But hair bands were huge at the time. The movie covers a lot of the musi at the time, which is why Tone Loc is in i and why Kyle Troy was this weak, pop star. If anything, the movie should've been more about the hair band scene.

They also brought up the tone saying that it needed to either be more funny and absurd or more serious. I think if you went more Ace Ventura with this movie, it would've really sucked. I think the movie actually plays very well tonally. It was supposed to be a Noir detective story. Going too silly with it would've made it too stupid.

I'm not saying the movie is a masterpiece. There are things that could've been improved on. But I think it is what it is and it's an enjoyable movie.

And they gave Robert Englund hell for his bad accent, but Billy Idol was supposed to play the part and the motorcycle accident he was in knocked him out of the role. Since it was written, probably with Billy in mind, thry had to find a relacement. Since Renny worked with Robet on Elm St. 3, he asked him to do it at the last minute.
