Earlier this year, John Gertz of Zorro Productions announced on its Facebook page that ZPI had purchased the rights to this series and he is currently looking for distributors to release it on DVD and to put it back on the air.
If you have any comments on how you would like the series to be released on DVD (one season at a time, all at once, bloopers, cast interviews, etc), or what network or cable outlet you think would be the best, please contact Mr Gertz at Zorro Productions.
I didn't believe that this would ever happen (and it hasn't yet so keep your fingers crossed) but it certainly sounds promising. Please pass this on to all the fans of this series that you know.
Zorro - Duncan Regehr's 1990 Family Channel Series is Planned for DVD Release
Zorro Production, Inc. acquired the home video rights to 'The New Zorro' earlier this year Posted by David Lambert 5/18/2010
1990's Family Channel series Zorro (a.k.a. The New Zorro) starred Duncan Regehr (The Monster Squad, V: The Series), Patrice Martinez (Beetlejuice), Henry Darrow (The High Chaparral and three other Zorro TV shows) and Efrem Zimbalist Jr. (77 Sunset Strip, The F.B.I., Batman: The Animated Series). Roughly half of the television incarnations of Zorro have had some sort of DVD release in the past, but so far this popular version has not been one of them. Somehow, though, we overlooked the good news announced earlier this year at Zorro.com!
As of January, 2010 Zorro Productions, Inc. (ZPI) has acquired rights in the 88 half hour live-action episodes created by New World Television, and most recently owned by FOX. ZPI's rights extend to most countries in the world, but not to all (the major exclusions are Germany, France, and Spain).
In the coming months ZPI will introduce this series to TV and DVD buyers all over the world.
Our thanks to reader Ken Todd for filling us in about this info! Since the news was actually from back in January, and since they say to expect more "in the coming months", it seemed logical to Ken that we should be able to find out more about this by now, so he asked us to do some digging.
What we've learned is that there is no release schedule nailed down yet, and that the plans for release are still in-the-works. They hope to have it available sometime to this year, but there's nothing specific available so far in the way of a date. It will be available in the USA, but a distribution method hasn't been nailed down so far, either (so we're unable to tell you if this will be sold in stores, or only online, or what).
It's good to know that this is being prepared, but it sounds like everything's still early...too early to be finalized yet. Stay tuned, though, and we'll update you as further developments occur!
Zorro - Updates for DVDs of the 1990 Family Channel Series starring Duncan Regehr
Looks like A&E Home Video has the distribution rights, and hopes to have DVDs out this year Posted by David Lambert 8/16/2010
We passed along news back in May that the "New World" version of Zorro, starring Duncan Regehr, which aired as part of the Family Channel lineup back in 1990, was coming to DVD. No specific timeframe was available then, but now one of our readers has pointed us toward an update! Our thanks to Darrell Ellis, who alerted us that the "ZorroLegend" blog posted an entry late last week, with the following information:
New World Zorro DVD Release Update
A&E Video has a target of December 2010 for the release of the New World Zorro DVD set. Keep in mind that the specific release date has not been determined and that release dates are subject to change.
The original target was Fall 2010 but that was a little too quick, so the new target is December 2010. A lot goes into preparing a DVD release such as this one. We are going to get some great bonus features, including outtakes and the original never-before-seen pilot that did not star Duncan Regehr. It takes time to process these bonus features. In the meantime, we have much to anticipate!
There's a number of pieces of information in there, so let's recap them: according to the quote above, A&E Home Video will be distributing the title, and are hoping for release in December 2010 (but it could still be subject to change). Extras will include the failed 1987 pilot treatment with Patrick James in the role of Zorro (more details on this in the blog at the above link, in a July 21st post), as well as outtakes from the regular series with Regehr. Of course, this information about the supplements isn't finalized, either, and could still be subject to change. Stay tuned for further updates!
