David Lynch left the series from ep 17-28 in protest.

But still appeared as Gordon Cole in many of those episodes? Makes no sense. Can someone explain?

He didn't actually leave the original series, although he was busy with Wild At Heart etc. The protest was before they filmed the upcoming series.

What? I've read everywhere that he left because the producers forced him to reveal Laura's killer 12 episodes before the show ended.

I always thought it was because he left to film a movie.

No. It's true that he didn't like having to reveal the killer, but he didn't leave because of it. However, I get the impression he gradually lost interest after this.
This time he's managed to get full creative control due to his walk out.

Well, clearly he cared a great deal. He directed an excellent finale, and prequel movie....but I do think his interest waned a little when he lost some level of control over the series.
