but I never found this show to be the least bit funny. To me it was just about four whiny, narcissistic, annoying, self centered people in NYC, and I couldn't care less about them. I would watch it and wonder "When does the funny part start?"
Because I'm still trying to understand why so many people found that show funny. I'm baffled. I even watched the 90 minute special after the series was over, and only chuckled a couple of times. Just not funny.
I tell you what I don't get. Why do people feel the need to log onto a board just to tell everyone that they don't like a certain show? There's plenty of shows that I don't like, but I don't go on their discussion boards just to let everyone know that ChalupaBatman doesn't like it.
What compels you people to give us this unsolicited information?
If you're truly asking, "Hey, what makes this so great? What am I missing? I want to understand." Then that's one thing. Ask the question honestly and you'll likely get thoughtful or insightful answers. Otherwise, you're just going down the list of message boards and starting threads saying, "Just wanted to let everyone know, I don't like this show."
ChalupaBatman99,
Apparently you misunderstood the central theme of my post, my dear friend. And it would seem that I expressed myself poorly, and in a manner which offended your delicate sensibilities. I now humbly apologize for my unfortunate faux pas.
I shall endeavor in the future to avoid initiating such boorish and irritating posts. My fervent hope is that this will ensure
a most satisfactory and agreeable experience for all parties concerned.
Meanwhile, that is exactly what I was getting at, though I obviously expressed it poorly. Why did people like this show? Hey, what makes it so great? What am I missing? I want to understand. There. I do hope I got it right this time. And any illumination which you can provide on these topics would be gratefully appreciated.
And I shall tell you something that I don't get. Why does one sometimes receive a hostile reaction in response to a simple opinion, especially here on the "General Discussion" board? This concerns and puzzles me. Once again any illumination you can provide concerning this troubling question would be greatly appreciated.
Oh yes, and what "compels" me, my dear friend, is the fun of discussing shows like this, and other topics, with sensible and intelligent gentlemen such as yourself. It provides one with both entertainment and enlightenment.
I thank you for your most kindly endeavors in this manner.
My sensibilities weren't offended nor were they delicate. I just didn't understand why someone would start a thread only to say, "Hey, I didn't like it."
If you really want to know what people like about it or find funny about it, then just ask. But your OP didn't do that. It just said you didn't like it, didn't think it was funny, and thought the characters were annoying and whiny. I understand that it's a discussion board, but the way you worded the OP shuts down discussion instead of opening it up. I've seen on boards for other TV shows or movies when someone posts something like that it just leads to mudslinging because the replies that come back are of the "You have no taste" and the "You're too stupid to understand it" variety.
I see that in another post you listed shows that you find funny. Several of the ones you listed, I like. Some I've never seen. Some I've given a chance and just didn't care for. All that to say, your taste has a wide range of style and time. So by that, I'm going to deduce you're old enough to have watched Seinfeld during it's original run. So that takes part of my explanation out of the equation because I notice viewers who weren't around for its original run or who weren't old enough to watch it then tend to think it's derivative and cliche in that it relies too much on tropes, when, actually, Seinfeld was the first show to do a lot of the things that today we find cliche. And we find it cliche because so many shows have copied tone and structure etc. from Seinfeld.
I didn't start watching Seinfeld from its debut but I did start watching fairly early on, before it became a hit. I thought that more people should be watching it because it was fresh. I had heard some of Jerry's stand up before and enjoyed it. But the show noticed small things about life and societal norms that I didn't realize anyone else had noticed or questioned but me. It felt like the show's humor was speaking directly to me. In the early years it had 1/2
several, "So I'm not the only one" moments for me.
Later it grew and changed. It did clever things like tying seemingly disparate story lines together. The best example being "The Marine Biologist." There did become a time when I felt maybe they had begun to rely on the tying story lines together thing too much.
But the show continued to grow and try new and different things. Which I always appreciated. It took TV sitcom tropes and turned them on their head. Or it would deconstruct the TV sitcom. It was pretty experimental as far as sitcoms go. And if Larry and Jerry had their way, it could've been more so. They wanted to do a single cam show without an audience or laugh track. It would've been more close to what we saw on Curb Your Enthusiasm.
I don't wanna make these posts too long, but those are just some of the reasons that I liked the show and found it funny.
You asked why people liked this show. I took you at your word that you were sincerely asking the question so I gave you an honest answer. That was my mistake. I see now that you just want to complain. You've proven my initial thoughts true; that you just started a thread to let everyone know that you didn't like it. Duly noted.
I looked at your post (above) and you wrote 5 paragraphs, not four.
To be honest, though, I didn't read your entire post. I started laughing during your first paragraph. So eloquent.
And I hope you do realize that I've been messing with you for over a month now. Why is it so easy to get you riled up? It's not even a challenge, really.
A fair question, Retro. Okay, just off the top of my head, and in no particular order:
Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency
The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (the original BBC series)
Red Dwarf
The Big Bang Theory
Young Sheldon
M*A*S*H
Cheers
Southpark
Parks and Recreation
The Wonder Years
The Goldbergs
Speechless
How I Met Your Mother
Mom
Two and a Half Men (with Sheen)
Scrubs
Frasier
How about you? What shows do you find funny, and did you find Seinfeld to be funny?
Yes I find Seinfeld very funny - although not much in its first season where it was striving to take shape. I find it funnier than the likes of Two and a Half Man, Mom, and the Big Bang Theory. Isn't Charlie Sheen's character or just about every other character on Two and a Half Men self-centered and selfish with humour entirely derived from their sarcastic barbs towards one another and Sheen bedding brainless women? With that I find the Seinfeld exclusion for apparently narcissistic characters puzzling.
I agree with much of what you're saying, Retro. Comedy is very subjective. You think this show is funny, and I don't, and I respect that. That's why they make chocolate and vanilla (and sometimes strawberry).
Are you not getting enough attention from your mommy? You have to seek it out on internet forums? One thread like this is pathetic enough, but to start a second one, just to get reactions from people, goes way beyond sad. You already sought attention this way 10 months ago...
You're full of crap. Posters pose these questions to bring about lively and interesting conversations, not to be insulted by brain dead morons like you. You're obviously a troll and an idiot, who likes to lessen his feelings of inadequacy be attacking others. It's classic. You try to make yourself feel good by pulling down others. You're a pathetic
loser!
So I guess that proves it. I was right. You're not getting the motherly attention you crave. And maybe you should learn what a troll actually is, before you continue to idiotically throw the term around incorrectly. You're the troll, fool. You create the same thread over and over for attention. Once is fine. Multiple times makes you a moron, a troll, and an attention seeker. All in all you have the mentality and intellect of a toddler. Your tantrum supports that.
See what I mean, attention seeker? You had to reply to me twice. And nice mouth??? What does that even mean? Are you actually too dumb to know the meaning of that phrase? It's used in response to vulgar language you brainless twit. None of which occurred. Please, can you embarrass yourself further? Your "bite me" reply is a good start.....
And you are an attention whore. You're a pathetic, obnoxious, brain dead irritant. You're like a small dog,
running along yapping and nipping at my heels. You're also boring, so bye! So go take a shit on somebody's lawn.
So, I accuse you of seeking attention via your duplicate thread creations, and you accuse me of being an attention whore? Can you think for yourself? All you did was say the same thing back to me, just much more childishly? Wow. The rubber/glue defense. Grade school memories. Are you an adult? These replies are simply sad. So very, very sad. You sound like an 8 year old, but I'm betting you're more like a 60 year old intellectually and emotionally stunted loser.
Thanks. A great country imho. My late father served in WW II in The First Special Service Force, which was a joint USA-Canada unit.
Snowflake is a term used to describe mainly college students who were (and still are) SO freaked out by the election of that mean, nasty old Donald Trump, that they need they need to be protected from the cruel world with "safe spaces". They are also provided with play-dough and coloring books (not making up any of this), so that they can curl up in the fetal position and cry. In other words, it means "pussy" or "wuss".
PS One of the coolest things about MC is conversing with folks from other countries. It sometimes gives one a different perspective.
I kind of figured it was something like that. I work at a University and some students have been attending for 10 years and up because they can't make it in the real world and can't get a job, so they just keep getting loans to stay in school.
I work hard and have a condo. That is my safe space
I'll just tell you then. They get their just deserts in the end when they are in a small town in Pennsylvania and refuse to help this guy whose car is stolen. They just video tape it and are laughing at this guy getting his car stolen. So they get arrested by a cop seeing them do this. Then they are put on trial where every person they weren't nice to on the show testifies against them. So they all get put in prison cause of their terrible behavior. And that's the end of the show.
I'm not the one who is stressing here. Everyone else is stressing. I simply made the comment that I didn't like the show, and its fans have been going ape shit ever since. It's kind of funny actually.
You let it go! You're the one who's obviously hung up. I grew bored with the conversation long ago
but people like you continue to harass me about it. So please, let it go! Stop!
I am just saying that based on your comments, this particular show might now be the show for you. You might want to consider other hot comedy progrms for your laugh out loud fix.
I'd be happy to recommend some if that's what you're hinting at.
And I am very ok with this not being the show for you. That is ok. Not everyone has to like every single show ever. I can help you but I don't care for the word Duh.
I believe it is yes. So let's just refrain from that. And then I can help you find the right comedy shows for you, customized to your unique tastes and viewing needs.
Okay, just messin' with you, dude. But please remember, I'm an Old Skol guy. Sometimes I forget things. If I do, just give me a gentle reminder. (No cattle prods, please.)
Haha yes. A gentle reminder is fine. I threw up the first and only time I tried Skol. (It was in a locker room) Now I enjoy the occasional Peach/Cherry Prime Time Cigar, although they made flavored tobacco illegal where I live.
It's not a matter of the time involved. It's just silly. It makes me think you're pulling my leg.
I told you I wouldn't use the term in the future. I'm not going to go back and erase history. That's what they did in George Orwell's "1984", and I'm not going to do it.
That is actually quite a valid response. You gave me good reason, so I think we can work together on finding you better comedy programs. Now we can move forward amicably.
