I kind of agree with the fact Ross, as a stand-alone character, is funnier than Jerry, as a stand-alone character as well. Ross, as well as Chandler (who's however definitely more popular) is often the comic hub of some of the best "Friends" gags and plotlines; Jerry's role is mainly reacting to his co-starring personas' quirkiness. George and Elaine (I don't care much for Kramer) wouldn't work without Jerry, since writing everyone over the top means delivering a flat pace to your comedy narrative.
On a side note, Elaine, in my book, is much hotter, funnier, and sexier than Rachel, Monica and Phoebe combined (not that I dislike the Friends' ladies, just to be clear).
Besides, Jason Alexander's on-the-edge-George persona in "Friends" was a riot.
