Victor Meldrew as King Lear?
Consider this a musing in the form of a question. Have the characters and the players in OFITG become so identified in YOUR mind that you cannot quite see them in other roles?
In other words, would you, if you were watching Richard Wilson in a performance of "Hamlet," for instance, call out to your spouse and say: "Honey, come look at Victor Meldrew playing Polonius"?
Or would you be horrified at seeing Annette Crosbie strip to the buff in "The Calendar Girls" and shout at the screen, "I am shocked, Margaret; never expected that from YOU!"
One of the dangers of popularity is that a successful performer can become typecast – in this case, character-cast. Without resorting to the obvious response, "Well, it's only a movie..." can you tell me if character-casting (or character-imprinting, if you prefer) diminishes your enjoyment of a movie or play?
