Do you think Victor is more angry at life because

He got older and doesn't understand modern people, or because he lost his son.

Or a combination of both.

Maybe if his son was still alive he could have connected with the oddities of the modern world.

I watched this show and read the novels so I picked up on the subtext.

I think he's angry more at the falling standards in society and people's lack of respect. He's not a perpetually angry and moody person, he's very pleasant at times, but he's also honest and outspoken and doesn't suffer fools gladly.

Same as first reply. Victor is actually quite pleasant to sane people, but the joke is that he's always in the wrong place at the wrong time, or surrounded by very stupid people.

Agreed, I think Victor like a lot of older genteel folk, myself included, cannot bear bad manners, selfishness, boorishness, pettiness, spite...... all of the things that go to make up some of the people that Victor meets on his travels.

Things like throwing a half eaten bag of chips onto the floor when there is a dustbin no more than three yards away.

I have always thought it was a comedic misconception that Victor is always angry, if he is it is mostly through suffering other people's stupidity, thoughtlessness, shoddiness....etc....

What he would have made of the modern curse, mobile phones I do not know. Parents more interested in what is happening on facebook than caring for or controlling their children. Poor and disinterested parenting would have made Victor boil. Particularly having lost a child of his own.

We.could do with people like him in government.

There were no novels for this TV show, stop making up crap.

Didn't Richard Wilson claim that he never played Victor to be grumpy? Just that he reacted to the stuff that was happening to him.

When you actually watched the show, some of the things that happened to him were unlikely and unfortunate. A lot of people would've reacted angrily to a lot of that stuff.
