It's stated that (Wikipedia my main source) that the show is set in Pinner, I know it's mostly filmed in Bournemouth (location scenes) however I cant recall anything suggesting exactly where the show was meant to be set

No not thinking of May To Dec, I do remember that show and I know they also shot Outside scenes in Pinner.
On Wiki there is a claim OFIG is set in Pinner.
Some of your theories do sound reasonable though
I vaguely remember an episode where Margaret implies that they live in the Home Counties.
Is Pinner in that region? As a Londoner I always thought Pinner was too close to be Home Counties.
Pinner is Middlesex so not really home counties as such, it's kinda swallowed up as Greater London these days and is on tube and within M25
