Victor Meldrew - An Insult?

It is funny (to me anyway) that when people want to shut someone up who is complaining they call them a Victor Meldrew. It happened to me the other day (online).

It shows how little most people understand Victor. The common misunderstanding is that Victor moans for the sake of moaning. He rarely does. Maybe he carries on, when the prudent thing would be to make the point and shut up.

Victor, and people like him, can see the deterioration of manners, the break-down of society. The loss of "shame" as a method for making good decisions.

There is no shame anymore in just lobbing a bag of half eaten chips into the street. Victor feels the pain of the loss of society and can't help himself.

There are dozens of examples in the UK alone where someone gets kicked to death for standing up to brainless morons and maybe this would have been Victor's fate in the real world. Something as simple as asking someone to use the litter bin rather than the pavement.

Victor is a modern hero. Pretty much everything Victor rails against is done with an eye to maintaining the basic minimum standards of humanity and community. So wear the "Victor Meldrew" insult with pride, he is up there with people like Dexter and Daredevil in my eyes.
