Rosebud - white man's healing stories

Hi, I am new to this board, but I am a longtime fan of NX.

One of my very favorite episodes was Rosebud, in the fifth season. I loved the interaction between Ed and Leonard while Ed was watching the Orson Welles movie, and it made him feel better. Leonard finally put it together that this was what he had been looking for; the collective unconscious of the white man was contained in the movies.

It is kind of like what IMDb does, gives us a space to talk about those stories. Since there wasn't any mention of this storyline in the plot summary, I thought this might be a place to start.

I googled Northern Exposure Rosebud and found this:

I thought some of you might find this interesting.

Thank you for sharing the link and your comments.

I've always liked "Rosebud," written by NX first-timer Barbara Hall, and I agree with Leonard--one of my favorite NX characters--that movies are in large measure our "healing stories." That really shouldn't be too much of a surprise as they are simply another storytelling manifestation, another way to tell the myths and legends around the campfire.

That said, and to the point of the blogger at your link, I stopped watching the Oscars years ago and only glance at the results the next day. I'm not too impressed with who wins and who doesn't any more.

I had to dig out my copy of 'Rosebud' and watch it again. It always cracks me up when Maurice waxes on about his vision of a future Cicely (parking lots, Burger Kings, shopping malls).

Interesting article you linked. Thanks! I'm a huge fan of Hannah And Her Sisters and I thought the scene described is a great example of healing through the movies.

As Steve Martin says in Grand Canyon...

"That's part of your problem: you haven't seen enough movies. All of life's riddles are answered in the movies."

You are welcome!

I, too, am a fan of Hannah and her Sisters, and I love Frederick's line, while watching televangelists:
If Jesus came back and saw what's going on in his name, he'd never stop throwing up.
