Detective Curtis
One of my favorite episodes involving Detective Rey Curtis was the one where he was angry with the witnesses because of their reluctance to help the police catch a suspect.
It was the story where a girl was pushed off a bridge in traffic. Curtis was pushing the line not controlling his disgust over the witnesses refusing to help the police. To the point where Briscoe and Lt. Van Buren had to warn him to watch it.
It is easy for us to identify with the police on a show like this. We want them to catch the bad guys. It shows how much resistance they supposedly get from the public.
I could really identify with his anger. I am often angered by the way this show portrays witnesses and victims as unwilling to cooperate because of largely selfish reasons. They often complain that police are not doing their jobs controlling crime. But, at the same time, when they have an opportunity to assist, they often say they don't want to get involved, or it is too inconvenient, or they are afraid, etc.
Also, at the same time, they say when a policeman is killed, "That is part of their jobs". But if their lives are ever threatened by helping to stop crime, they would rather be a punching bag or repeatedly raped by criminals than risk their lives.
Used to be people were honored to risk their lives for principles. Now, more often than not, people have no principles. They are just cowards willing to live as pathetic, irresponsible victims and hypocrites.
