This episode perplexes me. Why did that crazy woman have her daughter kidnapped by a professional felon who had a well documented propensity for excessive violence?

She did to annoy, if not totally frighten her estranged ex-husband. It doesn't appear she knew about the kidnapper's other violent crimes. The middleman (her boyfriend from the rehab center) didn't seem to know about it, either.
