Cutter v Van Buren.

Ooo! Michael Cutter doing that to poor Anita Van Buren as she sat in the witness box as he brought up her cancer treatment. She was not a happy lady. He certainly is willing to do all to win his cases. But a heads up was required surely.???

reply

What Cutter did to Van Buren reminded me of what McCoy did to Olivet in one episode, bringing up her being raped by her gyno and alluding to an unspoken affair she had with Detective Logan(?). Jack couldn't tell Olivet in advance for the same reason Cutter couldn't tell Van Buren - it would be witness tampering.

reply

ADA Stone was the one that brought up Liz being raped, not Jack,

It was 2 different episodes.

In season 3 episode 9, titled Point of View, ( coincidentally, Lennie Briscoe's first episode ) Stone brings up Olivet's rape to make her look biased when she testified on behalf on the defendant.

In the season 18 episode Betrayal, McCoy told Mike Cutter about how Olivet once had an affair with a cop who had lost a partner that was her patient ( it could've been Mike Logan, but we don't know, that is just speculation ). He did this so Cutter could challenge her testimony for the defense.

Similar situations but 2 different episodes.

Thank you, Xeliou66. I was referring to episode Betrayal.

Wouldn't a headsup defeat the object though?

Loved Cutter. Actually for a long time I couldn't decide if I wanted to slap him or kiss him. Settled on kiss in the end...

reply

Yep giving them a heads up would defeat the purpose, but I can see how Van Buren would be angry though. It did remind me of the time McCoy told Cutter about Olivet sleeping with a patient and Cutter used that to discredit her.

Cutter had both his good and bad moments, I liked him overall but he was an arrogant ass hole at times.

reply

Most probably why I couldn't quite decide if I wanted to slap him or kiss him. Settled on the latter eventually lol.

McCoy told Cutter about Olivet sleeping with a patient

The patient was Mike Logan and the affair was also alluded to in L&O: Criminal Intent when Logan went to see her after he was involved in a shooting.

reply

That has always been suspected but has never been confirmed. So you can't be certain that it is Logan as Olivet counseled numerous cops and it didn't seem like they were sleeping together when Logan and Olivet were in scenes together in L&O. I can remember the scene from CI that you are referring to

reply

I'm not a big CI fan and only started watching when Chris Noth joined the cast (and left when he did). According to wikipedia, it is the episode "To the Bone".

While it was never stated, I believe the writers confirmed it in an interview (although they could always change their minds) but if you're looking for evidence of an affair between the two after Season 1, it's easy to spot.

Also, given the writers track records of doing this, it also makes sense that it is Logan. They did the same with McCoy and Kincaid. They left hints of an affair, an affair was heavily implied after her death, and I think at some point it was confirmed. I think if the show hadn't ended at Season 20, they would've brought up the Logan/Olivet affair again.

reply

There was more than a hint to McCoy & Kincaid's affair! His previous asst. even knew; "you are sleeping with him aren't you?"  I think her name was Diana Hawthorne! The case had to do with her "helping evidence" convict the wrong man of a serial killing! 

Exactly, McCoy and Kincaid was implied on multiple occasions, such as that episode, before being confirmed after Kincaid's death. Logan and Olivet was never implied during the seasons they were on together, and just hinted at as a possibility in the later years. So there is no confirmation that Logan and Olivet had a relationship, it is probable but we don't know for sure.
