Onslow in the early episodes.

I seem to remember very early on in the series that Onslow was presented as a much rougher and courser character than the loveable layabout than he would later become. I didn't see the series in sequence from when it started and when they started repeating the first series I saw what might have been the very first episode but I can't be totally sure. I was struck by how different Onslow's character seemed to be, he several times refered to Hyacinth as an old bitch or words to that effect and he seemed slightly threatening and thuggish even.

I never noticed that. I've seen the first series several times and he seemed the same to me.

To be fair that line was used like any of the bits in Are You Being Served? (1972) about Mrs. Betty Slocombe's pussy. He was speaking about the hound in his front garden. Hyacinth merely happened to be nearby.

Hyacinth herself asked Onslow to appear for this reason at the golf course during the Frosticles episode. She wanted to play Richard off against his appearance.

As the series unfolded, I'd say we got to learn more fully about Onslow rather than there was any basic re-working of how he was played.

he didn't seem any different in the early episodes to me.

Hmm. I don't think so. I've been binge watching KUA for a while now (I tend to do this periodically over the years), and can't say I recall anything particular with regards to Onslow being more coarse in the earlier episodes. I know the characters were all finding their light, so to speak, as the series began, and some did indeed involve a bit. So perhaps you're onto something. I just never noticed.
