Random Thought About Sheridan

I don't know why this popped into my head at 3am this morning, but I apologize if this has been brought up before.

Obviously we know very little about Sheridan's upbringing and personality (besides what we know from his phone calls). But do you think he would introduce himself to people, or be known by everyone at University as Sheridan "Bucket" or "Bouquet"? I've often wished we could have seen Sheridan, just to know how much of Hyacinth's influence he retained. He obviously manipulates her for money, but I wonder if Richard ever pulled him aside and said, "Listen, it's pronounced BUCKET, not BOUQUET. Don't listen to your mother! :)

Funny you should bring this up, as I was just thinking the exact same thing just the other day while watching the show. I honestly think that Sheridan does not pronounce his name "Bouquet". I think he knows his mother is blind to his faults and he uses that to get what he wants. I would be willing to bet that he finds life in that house stifling just like Richard, and that is why he was so eager to be off to university, to be free of her expectations, and to live life how he wants rather than how she wants. I mean, plenty of little comments hint at his being gay and we know Hyacinth would not approve of that! I can't help but think that Sheridan was being a bit evil when he arranged for them to go yachting on that piece of junk, The Countessa!  That is just my ideas on the matter.

I agree with you, especially in regards to Hyacinth being blind when it comes to Sheridan. He definitely manipulates and uses this to his advantage. You can just tell by the way Hyacinth answers the phone when he calls...many times she's always assumed he's called because he knows that she's doing something "special" that day... when in reality, he's just calling for money! I agree too that he probably couldn't wait to get out of the house...being Hyacinth's husband is one thing, but can you imagine being her son or daughter?! Haha I can only imagine the nonsense that poor kid would've had to go through - I'm sure she would've wanted him to play with specific kids whose parents were of some local importance, or dress a certain way. Basically, just like Richard, Sheridan probably had no voice or chance to do what he wanted. Imagine Hyacinth as your mother and missing curfew ;)

I think Sheridan would definitely be more like Richard in the fact that he finds Hyacinth overbearing. I think he loves her and knows that he can get away with stuff though.

In regards to the name I think Sheridan would just introduce himself as Bucket, I don't think he would need to bother with social graces.

I know this is a glaring cliché and stereotype, but gay sons usually have a very close relationship with their mother.

S heridan never went to a university. In the first episode Hyacinth tells Elizabeth that he is at a Poly Technical school, that is, "University standard". She continued this fallacy throughout the series. He was not University standard himself.

First episode aired in 1990 when some poly techs in the UK were university standard - under the Further and Higher Education Act 1992 they all became fully fledged universities.
