To be fair a lot of celebs have propably done what Angus did. The only diffrence was that Angus got caught. It's sad he got sacked because he was the best presenter and it's just not the same without him.
Several newspapers reported on it, but most notably The News of the World. Angus admitted the allegations. Like hans45 said it's a shame he got sacked, but how could he carry on presenting the show, taking the mickey out of the guests for their infedelities and faults, after that? He had become the joke and it was a joke that was going to wear out very fast.
I agree - I never felt Angus was sacked for what he did, but because it simply made it ridiculous for him to continue chairing a satirical news quiz that routinely attacked the foibles of its subjects.
On his penultimate episode, when the rumours were flying, Christine Hamilton was a guest and Angus repeatedly referred to her husband as "disgraced ex-Tory MP Neil Hamilton". She eventually snapped and said, "Stop calling my husband disgraced! If he's disgraced, what does that make you?" Angus had no possible comeback. When Christine Hamilton is scoring points off you, I think it's probably time to reconsider your position.
I personally don't think there was anything much wrong with what he did - certainly it should have been left between him and his girlfriend - but then, it was his job to take the piss out of other people on a weekly basis for just such publicly-reported misbehaviour, so he really had no-one else to blame for the treatment he received and I think he knew that.
I do feel, though, that Paul Merton in particular has been especially unsympathetic and gleeful about the sacking ever since - as if he's just glad to see the back of him...

That was a definite low point, but he still had the support of the audience...
Paul Merton always looked like he despised Angus, even before the scandal.
There was a friendship between the three of them - I think the friction was for entertainment and comedy value :-)
And yes, the News of the World isn't even worthy of the title "newspaper". They take lies and muckraking to new depths. It's also Piers Morgan's , who famously had a really rough ride on HIGNFY because he tried to bully the audience and intimidate the other panel members.
So it's hard not to feel really sorry for Angus. He held his hands up, admitted his mistakes and paid a high price. HIGNFY is definitely not as good as it used to be.
The basic reason they fired him was, after the Christine Hamilton episode, it got to the point Angus was starting to veto any jokes that came back on him, so they decided to let him go because it would be hypocritical to take shots at one element of the news, but Angus wasn't allowed to be the butt of any.
Now that we have guided missiles, we have misguided men.
Does anyone know what happened to Angus in late 1994(mentioned in the tabloids), something to do with Australian hotel rooms, was it to do with his relationship with Stephanie de Sykes? It was mentioned in the first episode of the 8th series (Martin Clunes and Judge Pickles appear in it).
I was always of the impression that it wasn't what he did that let do his firing, but the fact that it would seem hypocritical for him no continue lambasting people after what he'd done.
