Favorate/worst Guest Presenter

You gots one?

I only liked brucy baby, he kinda reinvented the format during his stint.
The rest of them have been terrible,

John Sargent is the worst, he trys to hard to be funny when he REALLY isn't, he seems to think hes reinvented himself as a comieden just because hes got every 'Goon Show' on tape.

Bruce was awful, just like he is in everything else, but not my least favourite. That honour has to go to Anne Robinson. It was irritating the way she felt she had to prove she was the boss by constantly messing with the scores, and for someone who spends most of her time now reading an autocue you'd think she'd be able to do it without looking constipated by now.

Favourite guest presenter is Alexander Armstrong. Having been in the studio audience for three of his presenting slots on the show I can safely say the man is hilarious.

reply

Have to think about worst but my faveourite guest presenter so far has to be Boris Jonson. The 2 episodes he did were the clossest i came to p ing myself laughing ever.

Also, i dont think she was messing with the scores to prove she was the boss, its a joke based on the fact she used to work for Robert Maxwell, who Ian often made jokes about.

From the creators of Futurama .... Futurama!!

reply

What's messing with the scores got to do with Robert Maxwell? She started doing it because Paul had made fun of her wink several years previously.

my worst guest presenter: alexander armstrong, fav: boris johnson

who thinks jo brand looks like john sargeant??

Favourite: Boris Johnson

Best (the one I'd want to see present every week): Marcu Brigstocke

Worst: Neil Kinnock

best: Chris Langham
worst: Robin Cook

reply

Blatantly the best presenter was Bruce Forsyth, after 15 years of exactly the same format this guy just came along and turned the show on it's head, it wouldn't work if he presented it every week, but for a one-off special he was great.

reply

[deleted]

Langham's not going to happen again (an neither, for different reasons, is Robin Cook)! My vote for best would be Alexander Armstrong or Jack Dee (they're just natural hosts, potentially better than Deayton was), and worst? Widdecombe, (who was so p***ed off with Jimmy Carr she's never doing it again), Neil Kinnock (OK as guest, far too dull to be guest host), and Charlotte Church (who knows nothing outside singing, rugby and celeb magazines).

reply

Absolutely agree with the worst presenter being Kinnock. No wonder he lost to Major for all those years. Spitting Image probably didn't help either.

My favourite guest presenters (i.e. the ones who know what they're doing) are Alexander Armstrong, Dara O'Briean and I would agree that Marcus Brigstocke would be good as a regular. However, he is permanently tied up with his Radio 4 work.

reply

Best: Dara O'Brian (I'm not sure how you spell his surname though!). There have been a lot of good ones, though; I loved Martin Clunes.

Worst: Neil Kinnock. Painful. With Anne Robinson a close second. All these years reading off an autocue and she still can't get it right.

I have nothing to say, I just love this hat.

reply

Best: Jack Dee or Alexander Armstrong

Worst: Far and away Joan Collins, she's not funny, simple as that really.

reply

I've never seen Neil Kinnock as a presenter of this show. Some of my favourites are Boris Johnson, William Hague, Des Lynam and I'll probably think of some others later.

I don't think there's been a bad presenter. They've all been good in their own way.

reply

I've never seen Neil Kinnock as a presenter of this show.
It was shortly after Kinnock had been given his peerage, and Will Self - on Ian's team - was apparently furious with him for accepting it, so it kept cropping up. It made me cringe.

Aside from that, it was agonising because Kinnock was painfully bad at reading the autocue; he read as though he was recovering from a stroke. (If it turns out that he was, I apologise.) I remember when he was on as a guest and he wasn't half bad, but as a presenter... yeeesh.

Oh, yes, if a pig comes by Castle Dracula on a Tuesday, playing a banjo…

[deleted]

It's mostly a male show, so when you get a female guest host then the chemistry is different and more fun.

Anna Ford was great, and so was Kirsty Young. I think Paul fancied Kirsty (And who could blame him) and he liked to keep her laughing.

The woman from Frasier was good too.

I'd say Neil Kinnock was one of the worst hosts.

reply

Best: Martin Clunes, William Hague, Boris Johnson, Kirsty Young, David Dimbleby, Alexander Armstrong.

Probably have enjoyed William Hague's appearance overall

Worst: Bruce Forsyth/Sanjeev Bhaskar/Anne Robinson/Paul Merton.

Bruce because he was trying to change the format of a successful show - you're there to present HIGNFU, you shouldn't try make it into something it isn't..just because that's what you're best at.

reply

William Hague is a really funny guy! (surprise) I think there's been a mix of good ones and terrible ones - I liked Brucie and Boris, but I think they need to choose people who Hislop and Merton can really rip the sh*t out of - generally, the "real" presenters haven't been as amusing. In my opinion anyway. E.g. Sir Trevor Mcdonald, Anna Ford, etc. Although I'm sure there's been some brilliant people who have completely slipped my mind. Personally, I miss the Deayton days.

reply

Best: Kirsty Young and William Hague. Kirsty Young didn't surprise me but Hague certainly did! Especially when he finally hummed the ring frog tone on his first appearance...
Bruce Forsyth was a joke! It idn't really work for me but i did like Hislop's bemusement throughout the whole game.

Boris Johsnson is everyone's favourtie HIGNFY but well deserved.

Worst: Charlotte Church. The most obviously auto cued presenter ever.

reply

I really enjoyed the episodes that Kirsty Young presented, and like another poster, I think there appears to be "something" between her and Paul Merton.

I also really enjoyed Ronnie Corbit's Christmas episode. Alexander Armstrong is always great on the show.

I didn't like Robin Cook's at first, but after watching the bits on the DVD again, I seem to like it more.

I do agree with another poster who said they should get someone they can rip the piss out of. It would be interesting to see what they would do with Boris Johnson back on the show as he's not been on since his affairs. I thought that the episode with Greg Dyke was pretty good, and there was plenty for them to take with mickey with there.

Anne Robinson was quite painful, as was Joan Collins and Neil Kinnock.

reply

[deleted]

William Hague without a doubt!

Henry Gale: "God doesn't know".

reply

Yeah, I liked Hague.

Ephraim Hardcastle (?) in the Mail is campaigning to bring Angus back, or as I like to call him, anu$. His argument is that there's never been a good presenter since he left. Well, he should read this thread then, there's a list!

Have you no thought, o dreamer, that it may be all maya, illusion?

reply

dara's always good, as is kirsty young. alexander armstrongs good as well, i would behappy if he was a permanent host. trevor mcdonald and jack dee are good as well. jeremy clarksons always good as well

worst one was anne robinson. jimmy carr was quite bad as well, but luckily ross noble was there so the episode wasnt too bad. i didnt like julian clary much either.

have been watching some old episodes recently, and i think angus was really good, but i wouldnt want him back now, i think the guest presenter format works well.

reply

Well, most of them were pretty similar because they all read an autocue with jokes written for them. The best guests were the ones who got involved with the 'banter'. Jack Dee sticks out for me, William Hague was a nice surprise too.

Worst? Charlotte Church probably. Anyone can read an autocue and laugh at Paul Merton. Well done love.

I am what I am and I do what I can.

reply

Yeah Charlotte Church was *beep* wasnt she?
Saw tonights with Roni (Im not being very funny, so i`ll do one of my impersonations) Anconna.

Piss awful

reply

Charlotte Church was absolutely, totally and definitely my least favourite; but she pisses the hell out of me anyway. Just awful!

Much as I hate to say it, although I love Gordon Ramsay, he was awful the other week. (Though he gave his fee to charity which I thought was brilliant)!

My favourites are Alexander Armstrong, Marcus Brigstocke, Martin Clunes, Jack Dee, Boris (occasionally) and Bruce as a one-off ONLY! The format would get very tired if Boris or Bruce were regulars. But you know it's going to be a good show if any of these guys are presenting it. Kirsty Young was surprisingly good as well!

Paul once did it, Ian would make an interesting experiment! I would love for Reece Shearsmith, Tony Robinson, Charlie Higson or Hugh Laurie to have a go, or perhaps Stephen Fry. However Stephen said he would never go back on HIGNFY, in protest at Angus' sacking. Rightly so; I would love for Angus to come back.

That was a shame, I was looking forward to Ronni. She's really very funny. not last night though, last night she was awkward and the Ruby Wax impression was random and cringe-worthy.

I am what I am and I do what I can.

reply

Damian Lewis was the very best guest host so far - funny, quick-witted, smart, and good-looking too!

reply

[deleted]

didnt like ronni, but the actor guy a couple of weeks ago was good. i thought he handled it well when paul said "who are you?"

gordan ramsay was awful, i was glad paul kept taking the piss. he deserved it

reply

"...but the actor guy a couple of weeks ago was good. i thought he handled it well when paul said "who are you?"

That was Damian Lewis, he was hilarious!

reply

Anne Widdicombe was side-splitting!

reply

I also thought Anne was hilarious. That was one of the best episodes of the series. But Alexander Armstrong and Damian Lewis were great too.

reply

It's funny to see how opinions contrast completely. I thought Anne Widdecombe was awful. The episode itself was okay - mainly thanks to Paul Merton and Danny Baker - but Widdecombe was a dreadful host in my view, one of the worst there's been.

Why the BBC insist on getting politicians to present the show is beyond me. It's alright having them on as guests, because then they're there for Ian and Paul to 'rip apart' as they wish. But they have absolutely no sense of comic timing or delivery, and are therefore totally unsuitable for reading autocue gags...

I miss Angus.

Best- I liked boris johnson alot, but dara obrien was pretty damn funny too.
Worst- Charlotte church, she just aint funny.

The host last night wasn't great either.

I thought Dee was one of the better ones.

But Will Self laying into Kinnock was excellent

reply

Best presenter: I'm quite partial to Jeremy Clarkson actually. But he's very much a love-him or hate-him kind of guy.

Worst: I'm surprised no-one's mentioned this one yet. Remember Liza Tarbuck? One of the first guests, and her appearance prompted some speculation that Angus would be brought back because she was so awful.

reply

Best: Kirsty Young, Jeremy Clarkson, Martin Clunes

Worst: Neil Kinnock, by a long, long way.

reply

I've met Dara O'Briain and Will Self; in real life they are incredibly talented, quick thinking, intelligent and witty men.

I've met Ardal O'Hanlon too and he was the same. He'd be great for a guest presenter :-)

Dara O Brien is a great presenter, and William Hague was really funny too. It's a pity his likability didn't come off when he was going for prime minister, but no one really liked the tories in those days.

reply

Two Words: BORIS JOHNSON!!
He is awesome! As a presenter, not as a politician. What were the people of Henley thinking, electing him? He's so wonderfully clueless, and I like how Ian and Paul rip into him. Jeremy Clarkson was good, which is unusual because I hate him. I agree with whoever said that Gordon Ramsay was awful, it was embarrasing to watch

Heart of Gold that man, he'd do anything to you...for you.

Fern Britton last night was awful, one of the worst they've had. The choices the producers make sometimes baffle me. I don't know who, in their right mind, ever thought that she would be a suitable host. No comic delivery skills whatsoever. The opening part where she put on that rough voice while introducing Reginald D. Hunter was cringeworthy.

The same goes for people like Neil Kinnock, Charlotte Church, Ann Widdecombe, etc. You wonder what on earth made them think it was a good idea.

"If you shoot this man, you die next. Repeat. If you shoot this man, you die next."

reply

Fatty Fern was dreadful wasn't she, almost as bad as Churchy. As you say, does make you wonder what the producers were thinking - I think anyone could have guessed these two would be crap. That said, they've had some suprisingly decent choices - I don't think anyone would have expect William Hague, for example, to have done so well.

reply

Joan Collins may have not been the best but was surprisingly good (I was not a fan of hers). She was very sharp, gave quick and clever replies. But she had a quality that no other woman presenter had - a knowledge of men and their games and pretensions, and when they didnt impress. Having had more than 50 years of approaches from the most glamorous, charming, powerful and prestigious of men she had learnt to be able to put down any or all of them. It itimidated the male guests. None of them dared to make fun of her.

reply

Watching Kirsty Young tonight. She is very funny, and the raport with Merton is superb. I like the guest presenter, and even when they are terrible(Kinnock)it is so funny to watch the captains take the piss.
Dee was one of my favourites,as was Hague(if only he was in oppostion now, just to give us some choice!). Damien Lewis was excellent as well.
Would love to see some new faces on there now though. Any ideas?(Groucho Marks if he was still alive)or Ronnie Barker?

Here is a deal. I won't hate you for your choice of films, and you try not to hate me.

reply

Alexander Armstrong is really funny. However has Anyone here mentioned Bill Bailey? He should present it perminate. As for worse, well there's quite a few to choose from. Neil Kinnock was bad and as for Charlotte Church presenting, I wanted to take a sledgehammer to my TV set she was that bad. (bad idea to let kids present an adults comedy quiz show) I'm surprised her *beep* show hasn't been taken off air due to poor ratings.

reply

i think ann widdecombe is one of the better hosts myself, i also like jack dee, dara o'brian and boris johnson
