Are vampires part snake?
Because they do a whole lot of hissing in this show.
shareNot Really Dispite The Hissing Vampires have more to do with Bats
shareDepends on the culture, actually...If I'm not mistaken, there are cultures where vampires occur with assertions of reptilian traits--Like the "were" concept, which doesn't occur exclusively limited to canines or wolves, but, sometimes, involves crocodiles, foxes, large felines, etc, depending on the predators of the region of origin. I think the Western horror convention that makes vampires consistently HISS is somehow influenced by the feline-like appearance created by a vampire's fang-exposing countenance. I've never really heard anyone question it, before, but I got sucked in by the American film cliche to the point that I hold the HISS as part of accepted vampire folklore--One among my 1.5-yr-old son's catalog of animal noises is a HISSING sound, when you ask him, "What do vampires say?" I'd be interested to learn what work of fiction or film the vampire first HISSED in, because it certainly seems to have taken root in tradition.

I know this is a very old post but you really had no point in talking about vampires of other cultures. Yes, most of us know about them. I've studied parapsychology myself but this is DRACULA the series so you know which vampire mythos they are using and it has nothing to do with snakes.
I think the hissing sound in film originiated with Christopher Lee. His Dracula was very animalistic and made various snarling and growling sounds. A snarl could easily have evolved into a hiss.
The name Dracula does mean "Son of the Dragon" Stoker was probably ignorant of that, but it's still logical for latter writers to want to incorporate what the name actually means. Hence my own writings add a Dilophosaurus to the list of Animals Dracula can transform into.
"It's not about money.... It's about sending a Message..... Everything Burns!!!"
No, he knew it was son of the dragon. I believe Van Helsing himself comments on this in he novel.
This show was a fun TV series but the vampires were not part snake. I have the DVD set. The hissing was actually meant to be more of a feral cat-like thing for when they were enraged. It's an old Dracula movie trope. The only form Dracula could take in this show was a flock of bats, mist, or wolf, like in the novel.
And I'll tell you this one last time, I think your suggestion for his transformation is illogical, contradicts the very purpose for his shapeshifting (which was stealth in the Carpathian mountains) and ... I mean come on, a freakin' dinosaur?!
He was called son of the dragon because his father was a membe rof the order of the dragon, not because he was a DINOSAUR! There's nothing Gothic or mysterious about that. To me it sounds like an idiot twelve-year-old boy's fantasy. "And then... and then the bad vampire turned into a dinosaur! And gobbled everyone up! Roar!"
To me it goes up there with sparkling.
Like Carmilla, who becomes a Cat. Hissing is rather common in Vampire films, I personally dislike it.
I created a thread on this Forum, inspired by one of our past conversations.
"It's not about money.... It's about sending a Message..... Everything Burns!!!"
Yes, because dinosaurs are so much cooler and blend in so well. That's deep sarcasm mingled with raw hate, by the way.
Stealth isn't the only reason to become an Animal.
In our long argument about my Dinosaur thing, you manged to completely miss the most controversial detail of all.
That conversation isn't what I was refereeing to in my previous post however.
"It's not about money.... It's about sending a Message..... Everything Burns!!!"
1. He wasn't named for a dinoaur.
2. Every form he could take was a common nocturnal predator that would be over-looked by most humans. Not a giant lizard from prehistoric times.
No matter how much you argue it the idea still reads like a little boy playing with his action figures.
"And then the bad vampire turned into a dinosaur! And he gobbled everyone up! The end!"
Stop trying to promote the idea. It's pathetic. Haven't you noticed yet that no one on these forums or any vampire site thinks it's a good idea? Give it up already. It's a bad idea, let it go.
My story is not an Adaptation of Stoker's Novel so I honestly don't care about all arguments you make. So far I only have him even using that form in 1 scene.
Your the one who's way to emotionally attached to even insignificant detail of Stoker's Novel, actually the whole point of my Vampire story is to be as UnStoker like as possible.
"And then the bad vampire" why are you assuming my Dracula's a bad guy? My stories aren't very simple, their much more Watchmen like.
I'm not trying to promote anything, I simply mentioned it. I first came to this board today to discus the possible connection of this show to "Satanic Rites of Dracula" hence the thread I created.
"It's not about money.... It's about sending a Message..... Everything Burns!!!"
I'm sorry, I just don't really like the idea. Dinosaurs don't interest me and I don't associate them with mythical dragons even though they might be the original basis for the legends.
As a Creationist, I believe firmly that their Dragons, as well as Behemoth and Leviathan. Religion is my writing isn't very Traditional, but my Faith is still an influence.
