sanders is the one who stole the baseball. he committed the crime by stealing one of prof. cory randall's precious don drysdale balls. i don't understand how john sears is the bad guy for joking around that he called the cops on sanders. that doesn't have anything to do with the crime at hand: the baseball theft.
it all comes down to this question:
-why would the keg brotherhood want to vote sears out for possibly notifying the police about the sanders theft? they'd rather have a guy who steals things, steve sanders, and does so just b/c someone told him to?

Because steve was a pledge doing what his keg brother told him to do. If he didn't do what sears wanted him he'd be automatically kicked out. It was a catch 22. Once the frat found out it was sears who called the cops on steve it was obvious that he was REALLY to blame for calling attention to the frat.
Not sure how it works. I've never been part of a sorority or fraternity but the way the movies and tv make it sound is if you deny a brother or sister you're denying the order and that's definitely frowned upon.
I was in a fraternity. When you pledge a fraternity you pretty much do whatever the bothers tell you. Yes, there are lines that should not be crossed and if they are hopefully a more responsible brother step up and stops it.
In this situation Steve Sanders was told to steal this autographed Don Drysdale baseball and that it would be returned. If any of the brothers in the fraternity I was pledging asked any pledge to do that, anyone of us would have without hesitation. The ball would be returned.
However, in this case John Sears tipped off campus security. By doing so not only did he get Steve Sanders in trouble, he put the whole fraternity at risk. If it was discovered that he took orders from the fraternity to steal the ball the fraternity would likely have been put on suspension. I am the same age as the characters in 90210 and back then the fraternity would not be shut down for such a stunt, but they could be put on probation and forbidden from throwing partied for a semester.
If this happened when I was in school and this occurred, I can guarantee that the entire fraternity would have sided with Steve. Steve would not have been caught and the ball would have been returned if John Sears did not try to screw Steve.
The real question is, would it be double secret probation?? I kid, I kid.
That does make sense though. Steve was trying to fit in with the brothers, be loyal, a good sport, but Sears was just trying to be the vindictive prick that he was. Of course they'd take Steve's side !
