Do you think Dylan was a jerk for...
... shutting down Kelly every time she tried talking to him about the play? She was at her most despicable during the second half of S4 and even I felt sorry for her.

sharewell, she is too stupid to take a hint. I feel sorry for her only because her college career counselor was a moron for telling her she would make a god psych major.
way to self diagnose!
Oh God. Fortune vomits on my eiderdown once more.
I felt a twinge of sympathy but given the way she started the relationship with Dylan and her treatment of Brenda it quickly went away. I also didn't like her need to take everything away from Brenda so maybe if I felt like Kelly genuinely wanted the part then it would've been different. I'm watching the episodes showing today and she just seemed really annoyed/jealous whenever Brenda gets a compliment. She acted like Roy Randolph owed her a different welcome and she just had to get whatever Brenda was getting at the moment. So Dylan and Kelly were both jerks in their relationship. I think the acting storyline just showed that he clearly loved Brenda way more.

Yeah I actually thought Dylan behaved like a total douchebag. Just because Kelly had no prior plans or desires to become an actress the way Brenda had didn't mean she wasn't allowed to take a shot at it. She was apparently a good acctress and Roy Randolph gave her the encouragement to try something new....Then her own boyfriend and her supposed best friend seemed pissed at her for daring to expand her horizons. Sorry, but no matter how annoying or spoiled Kelly was, the treatment she received over wanting to be in a play was horrendous. If Dylan and Brenda were both sick of Kelly, they should have just said so and stopped hanging out with her rather than pretending to care about her all the while punishing her over and over through passive-aggressive or dismissive behavior.
I guess Dylan has this reaction because he knows way too well why she's suddenly interested in acting. It's only because Brenda does. He doesn't want to support that.
And she admits it at the end of the episode : she didn't like acting and she was only into it because she was jealous of Brenda. I think Dylan sensed that from the start.
Nah...I think Kelly did become interested in acting for a while after Randolph pointed out that she was good, but Dylan and Brenda both killed it for her by making her feel badly. So then she convinced herself that she was just jealous of Brenda and both really on to it... That helped her give it up more easily and then please her dick boyfriend and nasty so-called bff.
shareThink of it from Brenda's pov. Why wouldn't she be pissed? Everything she has Kelly always wants. Who wouldn't be sick of it?
shareWell then Brenda shouldn't have kept Kelly as a close friend if she felt that threatened by her. Simple.
And if Dylan felt the need to side with his ex-girlfriend over his current girlfriend on such a stupid issue, he should have just gone back to his ex-girlfriend since his loyalties obviously belonged to her!
Lol
^ This.
I felt the same. Initially Kelly had no real interest at acting, but was encouraged by Randolph and decided to go for it. What's wrong with that? Brenda was acting as if she had monopoly of the whole thing. And Dylan... I hated the way he behaved. Any normal boyfriend in his place would have encouraged Kelly.
Note that it was consistent with the general way Dylan acted throughout season 4, as if doing his best to piss off Kelly and make her grow distant from him: he rejected Kelly's invitation to Thanksgiving meal, but accepted the same invitation at the Walshes, and so on. I was relieved when they FINALLY broke up.
Agreed, and no one is mentioning why Kelly ended up at that audition in the first place. BRENDA pushed her to audition for a smaller role. Kelly was very resistant because she had no interest in acting whatsoever. Brenda wanted them to have an activity together. Kelly would have never auditioned at all if not for Brenda.
I'm the rare person who actually liked Brenda the most during the college years, but she got VERY weird about that play. And I studied theater in college too. As a freshmen at such a large university, it was very unlikely she'd be such a serious contender for a major lead with a renowned director. Those are junior/senior roles, all the way. She choked in the audition, FCOL. That DOES play into a university director's casting evaluation. If you choke two seconds up on stage, what about opening night? Anyway, all that aside, Brenda acted VERY entitled to it. Kelly never had passion for it, even when she was slightly intrigued by Randolph's compliments and attention.
Anyway, they made up very nicely in the end and came to terms with their competitive streak against each other that they BOTH had, so ultimately it all worked out.
Maybe it was payback for her salty chips complaint?
